Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle

The drive to the northern suburbs was a blur of flashing lights, roaring engines, and dark window glass. Elena sat in the back of a luxury armored SUV, wrapped in a cashmere blanket Julian had tossed over her shoulders, her fingers clutched around the platinum watch in her pocket.

Beside her, Julian sat in silence, reviewing tactical reports on a tablet, his face an unreadable mask of stone. Yet, every few minutes, his eyes would flick toward her, checking her pulse, her color, and the subtle movements of her baby beneath the blanket.

Forty minutes later, the heavy iron gates of the Rossi Estate swung open.

The estate was a staggering display of wealth and security—a sprawling stone mansion surrounded by thirty acres of manicured woods, enclosed by ten-foot stone walls topped with security cameras and armed guards patrolling with Belgian Malinois dogs.

The SUV pulled up to the grand marble portico. Julian stepped out first, extending his hand to help Elena down.

"Welcome to your new home," he said quietly.

Elena looked up at the towering mansion, feeling smaller than ever. "This isn't a home. It's a fortress."

"A fortress keeps the world outside," Julian replied, guiding her up the grand steps with a firm hand on her lower back. "Which is exactly what you need."

Inside, the mansion was warm, smelling of polished mahogany, fresh lilies, and roasted garlic. A team of servants in neat uniforms stood in a line in the grand foyer, bowing respectfully as Julian walked in with Elena.

"Prepare the East Wing suite," Julian ordered the housekeeper, a middle-aged woman named Mrs. Gable. "Call Dr. Harrison. I want a full medical checkup performed on Elena within the hour."

"Right away, Sir," Mrs. Gable replied, looking at Elena with warm, sympathetic eyes.

"I don't need a doctor!" Elena protested, pulling away from Julian's grip. "I just need to know what you plan to do with me! Am I your prisoner?"

Julian stopped. He turned to face her, waving his hand to dismiss the servants. Once they were alone in the grand foyer, he stepped into her personal space, his gaze piercing.

"A prisoner does not have a private maid, a nursery custom-built by top designers, or an unlimited line of credit, Elena," Julian said softly. "You are my guest. My most honored guest."

"Because of Arthur?" she challenged, her chin held high despite her trembling body.

Julian stared at her for a long, heavy moment. Slowly, he reached out, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her lip.

"At first... yes," Julian admitted, his voice dropping to a dangerous, intimate rasp. "My grandfather asked me to protect the woman who gave him shelter when his own captains betrayed him. But then I looked at you through those cameras, Elena. I saw a woman fighting the world with nothing but her bare hands and a soft heart."

His hazel eyes flashed with an intense, intoxicating fire. "And I decided that a woman like you deserves a kingdom... not a drafty attic in the West Side."

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. She wanted to hate him, wanted to scream at him for uprooting her life, but the sheer power of his presence was overwhelming. Before she could form a reply, a deep, raspy voice echoed from the top of the grand marble staircase.

"Julian," Arthur Rossi said, leaning on a polished cane as he walked down the stairs, looking entirely transformed in a sharp grey suit. "Stop terrifying the poor girl. She’s had a long day."

May you like

"Arthur!" Elena gasped, taking a step toward the stairs.

Arthur smiled warmly, stepping down to greet her. "Ah, my dear Elena. Forgive my grandson. He has the manners of a wolf, but I assure you... his teeth are only reserved for our enemies."
