Chapter 10 - The Kingpin’s Legacy

One year later.

The summer sun beamed down over the rose gardens of the Rossi Estate, bathing the green lawns in golden light. The air smelled of blooming jasmine, sweet grass, and the faint, salty breeze from Lake Michigan.

On the grand stone terrace, a long white table was set for a celebration.

Arthur Rossi sat in a comfortable armchair at the head of the table, holding a small glass of lemonade, watching a one-year-old girl with dark curly hair and bright hazel eyes toddle across the grass in a tiny yellow dress.

"Slow down, little lioness," Arthur chuckled, his raspy voice full of warmth. "Your old great-grandfather can't chase you like I used to."

Lily giggled, her tiny feet stomping on the grass as she reached out her arms toward a tall figure walking out from the French doors of the mansion.

Julian Rossi stepped onto the terrace. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing his muscular forearms, stripped of his dark suits and heavy weapons. He looked younger, happier, the cold armor of his past replaced by a deep, radiant peace.

He scooped Lily into his arms, lifting her high into the air as she squealed with delight, before settling her comfortably against his hip.

"Have you been bothering your great-grandfather again?" Julian teased softly, bopping her tiny nose.

From the terrace doors, Elena stepped out, carrying a large silver tray with a birthday cake decorated with pink sugar lilies and a single burning candle.

She looked breathtaking. She wore a simple, elegant white summer dress that draped over her healthy, glowing figure. Her dark hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and her brown eyes shone with an uncomplicated, profound happiness.

Julian walked over to her, sliding his free arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side. He leaned down, kissing her softly on the lips—a slow, tender kiss that spoke of a love forged in fire and settled in peace.

"Everything is ready," Elena smiled, setting the cake down on the table. She looked at Arthur. "Arthur, make sure she doesn't eat the candle before we sing."

Arthur laughed warmly. "My dear, she has her father's appetite and her mother's stubbornness. I make no promises."

As they gathered around the table to sing, Marco stepped onto the terrace, wearing a clean suit, holding a leather folder. He gave Julian a respectful nod from a distance.

Julian kissed Elena’s cheek. "Give me one second, my love."

He walked over to Marco at the edge of the terrace. "What is it?"

Marco opened the folder. "The final papers for the Rossi Foundation have been signed, Boss. The $100 million fund has been officially transferred to build housing and medical centers for widowed mothers across the Midwest. The city council approved the name change this morning."

Julian looked down at the document. At the top of the parchment, printed in bold gold letters, were the words:

THE THOMAS & ELENA MILLER FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

"The syndicate's legitimate conversions are one hundred percent complete," Marco added softly, a rare smile on his face. "The old docks are clean. The unions are legal. You’re clean, Boss. Entirely clean."

Julian signed his name at the bottom with a silver pen, handed the folder back to Marco, and clapped his lieutenant on the shoulder.

"Thank you, Marco. Go join the party. Have some cake."

Julian turned back to the table, where Elena was holding Lily up to blow out her single birthday candle, Arthur clapping his hands with joy.

He walked back to his family, wrapping his arms around Elena from behind, pulling her close against his chest as Lily clapped her tiny hands, giggling at the smoke from the candle.

Elena leaned her head back against Julian’s shoulder, looking up at his hazel eyes, full of love and quiet devotion.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

Julian looked at his wife, at his daughter, and at his grandfather, sitting under the warm sun in a world free from violence, blood, and fear.

He reached into his pocket, pulling out the platinum pocket watch Arthur had left on her kitchen table over a year ago. He opened the latch, revealing a new photograph fitted inside—a picture of Elena holding newborn Lily, with Julian standing behind them, his face filled with proud, protective warmth.

Julian snapped the watch shut, sliding it into Elena’s palm, closing her fingers over it.

"I'm thinking," Julian whispered, leaning down to rest his lips against her temple, "that a bowl of tomato soup was the best investment my family ever made."

Elena laughed—a beautiful, ringing sound that filled the warm afternoon air—and turned in his arms to kiss her husband, as the sun shone brightly down on the house that love had built.
