Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

Elena stared at the tall man before her, her breathing rapid and shallow. Her mind was spinning—first the old couple, then $50,000 in cash, and now a mafia don standing in her ruined doorway, claiming he owned her building.
"Julian Rossi..." she whispered, the name echoing like a warning bell in her mind. She had heard the whispers on the news—the Rossi family controlled the docks, the construction unions, and half the politicians in Illinois. "Why are you here? What do you want from me?"
Julian didn't answer immediately. He looked around the cramped, cold apartment, taking in the peeling wallpaper and the damp ceiling spots. His jaw tightened with anger at the thought of her living in such conditions while carrying his grandfather's secret legacy.
"I am here to ensure your safety," Julian said calmly, taking off his black leather gloves. "This neighborhood is no longer safe for you. The Volkov syndicate knows my grandfather was in this area last night. They will sweep these streets, and if they find you..." He paused, his hazel eyes locking onto her belly. "They will use you to get to me."
"I don't even know your grandfather!" Elena cried out, her voice rising in desperation. "I just gave an old man some soup!"
"That old man was Arthur Rossi," Julian revealed quietly. "The founder of my family. And by giving him shelter, you placed yourself at the very center of a war that has been burning for thirty years."
Elena felt the room spin. Arthur Rossi. The sweet old man with the white hair was a legendary mafia kingpin.
"I have money now," Elena pleaded, reaching back toward the flour tin on the counter. "I can leave! I can take a bus to Indiana, change my name—"
"No," Julian interrupted, stepping even closer until he was towering over her. His hand reached out, not with violence, but with a firm, protective grip that caught her waist, steadying her as she swayed. "You are seven months pregnant, Elena. You are not running anywhere. You are coming with me."
"I won't go with a criminal!" she spat, though her heart hammered wildly against her ribs at his proximity. His touch was warm, possessing a terrifying strength that made her feel both utterly helpless and strangely secure.
Julian leaned down, his lips almost brushing her ear. "You have two choices, my sweet Elena. You can stay in this drafty room and wait for Volkov's men to burn it down... or you can come to my estate, where thirty armed men will guard your sleep, where a private doctor will deliver your baby, and where you will never want for anything again."
He pulled back, searching her eyes. "Choose."
Before Elena could speak, her phone rang from the counter—a sharp, shrill sound.
Julian reached over, picked it up, and pressed speaker.
A harsh, accented voice filled the quiet kitchen: "Elena Miller? This is Viktor Volkov. I believe you hosted two very interesting guests last night. My men are coming up the stairs right now. Don't make a sound."
Julian didn't flinch. He raised the phone to his mouth, his voice dripping with pure venom.
May you like
"Viktor," Julian said smoothly. "You're too late. She's already mine."
Julian crushed the phone in his bare hand, threw the shattered pieces onto the floor, and scooped Elena into his arms before she could utter a single word of protest.
