Chapter 9 - The Trial

Two weeks later, the Federal Courthouse in Manhattan was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, news vans, and crowds of citizens holding signs demanding justice.
Inside the grand courtroom, Julian Sterling sat at the defense table, wearing a dark gray suit, surrounded by six top-tier defense attorneys. He looked confident, smiling smugly toward the news cameras seated in the balcony section.
His chief attorney stood up, addressing the judge. "Your Honor, the prosecution's entire case relies on hearsay, circumstantial wiretaps, and the deposition of an eight-year-old disabled child who was not even present during executive corporate board meetings. We move for an immediate dismissal of all charges against Mr. Sterling."
The federal judge, a stern woman in her sixties, looked over her glasses toward the prosecution desk. "Prosecutor Vance, do you have your key witness ready to testify under oath?"
Arthur Vance stood up from his chair in the front row. He was wearing a dark blue suit, looking every bit the proud father.
"We do, Your Honor," Arthur stated firmly.
The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom opened slowly.
Maya walked down the long carpeted aisle, wearing a beautiful light blue dress, her dark hair neatly tied with a white ribbon. Beside her walked an official court-certified sign language interpreter.
The courtroom fell into dead silence. Every camera lens, every eye, every breath in the room was locked onto the small girl walking bravely toward the witness stand.
Julian Sterling leaned back in his chair, a faint, mocking smirk touching his lips as he watched her climb the wooden steps into the witness box.
The judge looked gently at Maya. "Maya, do you understand what it means to tell the truth today?"
Maya looked at the court interpreter, who signed the judge’s words smoothly.
Maya nodded her head firmly. She raised her right hand, taking the oath silently through sign language.
The prosecutor stepped forward. "Maya, can you look around this room and tell us if you see the man who gave the order to poison Arthur Vance?"
Maya sat tall in her chair. She didn't flinch. She didn't look at Arthur for reassurance.
Her dark eyes moved slowly across the courtroom, locking directly onto Julian Sterling.
She pointed her small finger straight at Sterling’s face.
Then, her hands began to move with clear, articulate, and absolute precision.
The court interpreter read her movements out loud into the microphone, her voice echoing off the tall marble walls:
"That is the man," the interpreter translated. "I saw him on the video screen in the kitchen on the night of October 12th. I read his lips when he spoke to Dr. Hayes. He said: 'Make sure Arthur dies slowly so Victoria can sign over the satellite defense software.' Then he gave Dr. Hayes a brown envelope containing fifty thousand dollars in cash."
The entire courtroom gasped softly.
Sterling’s defense attorney jumped to his feet. "Objection! A child cannot accurately decipher complex lip movements from a security camera feed!"
Maya didn't wait for the interpreter. She looked directly at Sterling, her hands moving with lightning speed:
You also said your wife was too stupid to find your Swiss accounts in Zurich, the interpreter translated in real-time, her voice ringing clearly across the room. Account number 4-4-8-9-7-2.
Julian Sterling’s face went completely red, then drained into absolute ghastly white. He stood up so fast his leather chair knocked over backward onto the floor.
"How... how does she know that number?!" Sterling stammered, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he looked at his lead attorney.
The judge slammed her gavel down hard three times. "Order in the court! Order!"
She looked over at the jury box. The twelve jurors were staring at Sterling with absolute disgust and horror.
"The defense's motion to dismiss is denied," the judge declared firmly, her voice echoing like a final judgment. "Mr. Sterling, you will be remanded into federal custody immediately without bail pending final sentencing!"
Federal marshals stepped forward instantly, snapping heavy iron handcuffs around Sterling’s wrists as he was dragged kicking and screaming out of the side courtroom door.

The courtroom erupted into massive applause. Reporters rushed out the back doors to broadcast the breaking news to the world.
Arthur walked straight to the witness stand, lifting Maya up into his arms, pulling her tightly into his chest as the crowd cheered.
