Chapter 2 - The Cold Awakening

The heavy oak doors of the dining hall slammed shut, locked securely from the inside by two of Arthur Vance’s personal bodyguards. The air inside the private estate turned frigid. What was meant to be an intimate engagement dinner celebrating Arthur’s upcoming marriage to Victoria cross-cut into a crime scene in less than five minutes.

Arthur Vance, fifty-two, worth over seven billion dollars through Vance Global Dynamics, sat motionless at the head of the mahogany table. His gray eyes, usually sharp enough to dismantle entire corporate boards in seconds, were locked onto the small glass vial sitting in his personal doctor’s hand.

beside him stood Victoria, her pristine satin gown shimmering under the crystal chandelier, her polished smile now crumbling into panic. Opposite her stood Dr. Jonathan Hayes, the family’s head physician for over twelve years—the man Arthur had trusted with his life after his late wife, Eleanor, had passed away from cancer six years prior.

Between them stood Maya, an eight-year-old orphan girl wearing a worn denim dress, her fingers trembling slightly as she held her old stuffed fox. She was deaf, mute, and completely ignored by high society—until five minutes ago.

Arthur looked down at Maya. In clear, precise American Sign Language, he signed: Are you safe?

Maya’s small hands responded instantly, her movements sharp with adrenaline: I hid under the sink. I saw him give her the white pills. She said you would be sleeping soon.

Victoria took a step forward, her voice rising an octave, thick with forced laughter. "Arthur! You cannot honestly be listening to the silent ramblings of a maid’s orphaned child! She’s confused! She probably saw Dr. Hayes giving me my daily vitamin supplements!"

"Vitamins?" Arthur’s voice was low, devoid of emotion, yet carrying a weight that made Dr. Hayes take a step backward toward the locked exit. "Since when does my physician give my fiancée prescription-grade neurotoxins under the kitchen sink at nine o'clock at night?"

Dr. Hayes cleared his throat, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "Arthur, let us be reasonable. As your physician, I was merely examining Victoria’s daily iron supplements—"

"Shut up, Jonathan," Arthur said softly. He didn't raise his voice, but the entire room went dead quiet.

Arthur stood up from his chair. Over the past eight months, he had suffered from mysterious, sudden bouts of memory loss, chronic dizziness, and mild tremors. His board of directors had already begun whispering about early-onset dementia. Stock prices for Vance Global Dynamics had fluctuated wildly as rumors leaked to the press that the great titan of industry was losing his mind.

He had trusted Jonathan. He had trusted Victoria. He had brought her into his home, placed an eight-carat diamond on her finger, and granted her power of attorney in his primary medical directives just three weeks ago.

Arthur turned his head slowly toward his chief of security, a towering man named Briggs who had served with elite military forces before joining the Vance estate.

"Briggs," Arthur commanded, his eyes never leaving Dr. Hayes. "Take their phones. Secure the house. Nobody enters, nobody leaves. Call the private forensic team from St. Jude’s—not the city police yet. I want every single drop of food in that kitchen analyzed before midnight."

"Arthur, no!" Victoria shrieked, dropping her composure entirely as she lunged toward Arthur, reaching for his arm. "You're making a massive mistake! I love you! Everything I did was for us!"

Briggs stepped smoothly into her path, his broad hand catching her shoulder and forcing her gently but firmly back into her leather chair. "Stay seated, Miss Victoria."

Dr. Hayes made a sudden break for the side service entrance leading to the terrace, but two security guards intercepted him immediately, slamming him against the mahogany wall and cuffing his hands behind his back.

In the middle of the chaotic room, Maya felt the heavy vibrations of the scuffle through the wooden floorboards. She pulled her stuffed fox closer to her chest and stepped closer to Arthur, her dark eyes wide with fear.

Arthur looked down, his hard, icy demeanor melting instantly. He knelt beside the young girl on the cold floor, bringing himself down to her eye level.

He raised his hands and signed smoothly: Thank you, little one. You saved my life tonight.

Maya looked into his eyes, her lower lip trembling. She raised her right hand, placing her thumb against her chin and extending her fingers toward him: Thank you.

Then, she pointed toward the kitchen footage screen again, her fingers moving with absolute urgency: There is more. In the basement. The black box.
