Chapter 3 - The Black Box

The subterranean level of the Vance mansion was a climate-controlled vault designed to store rare wines, corporate backup servers, and historical family archives. It was accessible only through a heavy steel door equipped with biometric scanning.
Ten minutes after Dr. Hayes and Victoria were detained in the library under heavy guard, Arthur, accompanied by Briggs and Maya, stood outside the heavy vault door.
"Sir, only you and your late wife had access codes to this section," Briggs stated, shining a flashlight down the dim hallway. "If Miss Victoria was down here, she had to have used a cloned keycard."
Arthur held Maya’s small hand gently as they walked. She guided them past the wine racks, straight toward a secondary breaker room hidden behind a floor-to-ceiling mirror.
Maya pointed to a small ventilation grate situated three feet off the floor.
Briggs pulled a pocket tool from his tactical vest, quickly unscrewing the steel mesh grate. Inside lay a heavy, waterproof pelican case equipped with a digital cellular transmitter.
"A rogue transmission node," Briggs muttered, pulling the box out and setting it on a wooden table. "It’s tapping into the mansion's main security network. Sir... every camera feed, every audio microphone, every financial document typed on your home network for the last six months has been mirrored and broadcast out."
Arthur stared at the blinking green light on the box. His hands clenched into tight fists.
This was not a simple attempt by a gold-digging fiancée to poison her rich husband for an inheritance. This was a sophisticated, industrial espionage operation designed to strip him of his multi-billion-dollar aerospace and defense conglomerate.
"Who owns the receiving IP address, Briggs?" Arthur demanded, his voice laced with venom.
Briggs opened his portable diagnostic tablet, plugging a fiber-optic cable directly into the rogue box. Code lines flew across the screen for thirty seconds before stopping at a registered corporate domain.
Briggs looked up, his expression grim. "It's routing through a holding company in Zurich, sir. But the ultimate parent entity... it belongs to Sterling Heavy Industries."
Arthur felt a cold shock hit his chest.
Sterling Heavy Industries. Owned by Julian Sterling—his lifelong business rival, his former college classmate, and the man who had lost the three-billion-dollar government satellite defense contract to Vance Global Dynamics six months ago.
Everything made sickening sense. Julian couldn't beat Arthur in the open market. So he paid Dr. Hayes—who had massive hidden gambling debts in Macau—and sent Victoria, a trained operative posing as an art curator, to infiltrate Arthur’s life, slowly poison his mind, and force him into a conservatorship where she would assume full executive control of the company.
Arthur turned to look down at Maya.
If this tiny, silent girl hadn't crept out of her mother's small living quarters in the servant wing to fetch a glass of water at midnight... if she hadn't possessed the intelligence to read lips in the dark kitchen... Arthur would have been mentally incapacitated within another month. He would have signed over his life, his legacy, and his company to the very people trying to destroy him.
Arthur knelt in front of Maya again. He took both of her small, cold hands into his own.
Who taught you to read lips so well, Maya? he signed gently.
Maya’s eyes filled with soft tears. She pointed up, toward the high ceiling, then signed: My mother. Before she got sick. She told me to watch everyone’s mouth because people hide their hearts behind their words.
Arthur’s throat tightened. Maya’s mother, Elena, had been a quiet, dedicated housekeeper at the estate for five years before passing away from heart failure three months prior. Arthur had allowed the orphaned child to stay on the grounds under the care of the senior kitchen staff, paying for her private tutors while he figured out a permanent guardianship arrangement.
He had thought he was doing the child a favor by keeping a roof over her head. He never dreamed she would become his guardian angel.
"Briggs," Arthur said, standing tall, his eyes burning with a dark, ruthless fire. "Call my chief legal counsel. Tell him to prep a full corporate asset freeze. And call Detective Vance at the precinct."

He looked back toward the stairs leading up to the main floor.
"It’s time to show Victoria and Dr. Hayes what happens when you try to put Arthur Vance to sleep."
