Chapter 6 - Cornered Rats

Stripped of his wealth, his position, and his reputation, Graham sat in a dingy, windowless apartment on the outskirts of the city. The contrast between his former thirty-million-dollar penthouse and this roach-infested hole was suffocating.

His phone had been ringing incessantly all day—creditors, reporters, and former associates demanding repayment for personal loans he had taken out under false pretenses.

A knock at the door made him jump. He grabbed a heavy glass bottle from the counter, his hands shaking, and approached the door slowly.

"Who is it?" he yelled.

"It's me, Graham. Open the damn door," a muffled voice replied.

Graham unlocked the door and pulled it open. Standing in the hallway was Savannah, looking exhausted, dragging two large suitcases.

"What are you doing here?" Graham spat, trying to push the door shut. "You betrayed your own mother! Get out!"

Savannah forced her way inside, shoving him back. "I had to save myself, Graham! And you're the reason we're in this mess! If you had just made sure Eleanor was dead or locked away in an asylum like you promised, none of this would have happened!"

"I tried!" Graham shouted, slamming the door. "Do you know how hard it was to slow-poison her without the private nurses noticing? I spent months making sure her doses were just high enough to keep her paralyzed!"

Unbeknownst to both of them, Savannah’s phone, tucked inside her open handbag, was actively transmitting an unencrypted signal.

Three miles away, inside Marcus Vance’s command center, the audio from Graham’s apartment was playing through high-definition monitors. Marcus and two federal investigators sat with headphones on, recording every single word.

"Did you catch that?" Marcus asked the federal investigator sitting beside him.

"Clear as day," the agent replied, marking the timestamp on the digital recording. "That’s an explicit confession to attempted murder and conspiracy to administer controlled substances."

Marcus immediately dialed Eleanor. "We have him, Eleanor. Graham just admitted on audio that he systematically poisoned you to maintain control of your assets. We have enough for an immediate arrest warrant for attempted murder."

On the other end of the line, Eleanor took a deep breath, feeling a profound sense of relief wash over her body. The physical trauma, the long nights of rehabilitation, the agonizing fear that she was losing her mind—it was all validated now.

"Issue the warrant, Marcus," Eleanor said softly. "Ending this legally is the final step."

"On it," Marcus said. " SWAT team is deploying to his location now."

Back in the apartment, Graham was pacing back and forth, grabbing a small duffel bag from under the bed. "I have two hundred thousand dollars in cash hidden in a safety deposit box in Jersey. I'm leaving the country tonight."

"Take me with you!" Savannah pleaded, grabbing his arm. "The media is hunting me down! I can't stay here!"

"Take you?" Graham laughed bitterly, shoving her away so hard she stumbled onto the worn sofa. "You're useless to me, Savannah! You were only valuable when your mother had money. Now you're just baggage."

Suddenly, the flashing blue and red lights of multiple police cruisers illuminated the thin curtains of the apartment window. Loud, booming voices echoed from outside through a bullhorn.

"Graham Whitaker! This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! The building is surrounded! Step out with your hands above your head!"

Graham froze. His eyes darted to the door, then to the fire escape window. "No... no, no, no! How did they find me?!"

Savannah backed away in horror, looking at her bag. She realized her phone was still lit up—an active call running to an unknown server.

"You... you led them right to me!" Graham screamed, turning on Savannah with pure rage in his eyes.
