Chapter 3 - The Scramble for Power

By midnight, the video of Victoria Ardell pouring gravy over Eleanor Whitaker, followed by Eleanor’s dramatic confrontation, had amassed over eighty million views online. News anchors across the country analyzed the financial scandal, dubbing it "The Billionaire Wedding Bust."

In her private penthouse overlooking the city sky, Eleanor sat in a leather armchair. She wasn't using the wheelchair now; instead, she leaned on a sleek silver cane. Her physical therapist, Dr. Aris, was gently applying soothing cream to the reddened skin on her right thigh where the scalding gravy had burnt her.

"You pushed yourself too hard tonight, Eleanor," Dr. Aris said softly. "Standing for that long without the leg brace fully locked could have caused a severe tear."

"Pain is temporary, Aris," Eleanor replied, her eyes fixed on the three monitors set up in her living room. "Losing momentum is permanent."

Marcus entered the room, setting a thick leather-bound folder on her desk. "The aftermath is glorious and messy. Ardell Realty stock plummeted sixty-two percent at the opening of the Asian markets an hour ago. Board members are fleeing, and three of Victoria’s major banks have pulled their credit lines."

"And Graham?" Eleanor asked, taking a sip of warm herbal tea.

"Graham is holding an emergency meeting with his board at Whitaker Holdings right now," Marcus smirked. "He’s trying to convince them that he was a victim of Victoria’s manipulation, not a co-conspirator. But the public outrage is catastrophic. Shareholders are demanding his immediate resignation."

Eleanor set her teacup down with a soft click. "He won't resign willingly. Graham’s ego is his greatest weakness. He would rather sink the entire ship than admit he didn't belong in the captain's chair."

"So what's our next move?" Marcus asked.

"We strike his supply lines," Eleanor said coldly. "Graham thinks he still owns thirty-five percent of Whitaker Holdings. He forgot that ten years ago, during our second expansion, we created a non-voting share structure tied to our original logistics patents. If I execute the default clause based on his financial misconduct, his voting rights are suspended automatically."

"That requires a sixty percent vote from the board," Marcus noted. "And currently, two of the board members—Arthur Pendelton and Julian Vance—are firmly in Graham’s pocket."

Eleanor’s lips curled into a faint smile. "Arthur Pendelton owes twelve million dollars to a casino syndicate in Macau, and Julian Vance’s secret shell company just received a suspicious two-million-dollar wire from Victoria’s seized offshore account yesterday morning. They aren't loyal to Graham, Marcus. They’re loyal to their own survival."

"I'll prepare the dossiers," Marcus smiled.

Meanwhile, in a glass-walled conference room downtown, Graham was pacing back and forth like a caged animal. Sweat soaked the collar of his expensive tuxedo shirt.

Across the table, Savannah was sobbing furiously, throwing her engagement ring at him. "My mother is in a federal holding cell because of you! You told us Eleanor was broken! You said she couldn't even remember her own name!"

"Shut up, Savannah!" Graham roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "Your mother was the one who stole from my company’s account! She set me up!"

"She set you up?" Savannah shrieked. "You were the one who signed those papers! You were greedy, Graham! You wanted Ardell land assets so you could look like a real billionaire instead of an ex-wife's puppet!"

The door to the conference room opened, and Arthur Pendelton walked in, looking deathly pale. He handed his tablet to Graham.

"What is this?" Graham snapped.

"It's a notice from the board," Arthur said, his voice trembling. "An extraordinary general meeting has been called for eight o'clock tomorrow morning. Eleanor Whitaker has officially filed for the repossession of all founder assets."

Graham grabbed the tablet, his eyes scanning the document. "She can't do this! She’s legally incompetent! I have the medical reports!"

"Those medical reports were signed by Dr. Harrison," Arthur said quietly. "The same Dr. Harrison who was arrested two hours ago for accepting three million dollars from your personal fund to keep Eleanor heavily sedated in the recovery clinic."

Graham dropped the tablet. The room seemed to spin around him. The web he had so carefully woven for eighteen months was unraveling thread by thread, and at the center of the trap sat Eleanor, waiting to finish what he had started.
