Chapter 9 - The Dawn of a New Empire

By 5:00 AM, the rain had stopped. The storm clouds rolled away, revealing the first golden rays of a bright autumn dawn breaking over the Bedford hills.
Federal authorities and local police, fully briefed by Adrian’s legal team with mountains of hard evidence incriminating the Genovese family for federal conspiracy, arrived at the gates to secure the property and take the surviving mercenaries into custody. Mason Vance was handed over to federal marshals, facing thirty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
The traitor Charles Reddick was gone, and the Genovese syndicate’s power in New York was permanently broken.
In the quiet library, sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
The heavy titanium door of the basement panic room clicked open. Claire stepped out, holding a sleepy Lily in her arms.
She walked slowly into the library, her heart pounding. The room had been swept clean of all conflict.
Standing by the large bay window, looking out over the sunlit rose garden, was Adrian. He had washed away the grime of battle, wearing a clean white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
He turned as he heard her footsteps.
Claire stopped. She looked into his eyes—eyes that were no longer cold, dark, or filled with the burden of a bloody past. They were warm, bright, and completely open.
Lily rubbed her eyes, looked at Adrian, and held out her small arms. “Uncle Adrian!”
Adrian walked across the room, taking Lily into his strong arms and holding her close. Lily immediately rested her cheek against his shoulder, her tiny hand reaching inside his collar.
She pulled out the silver pocket watch.
Lily pressed her ear against it and smiled brightly. “It’s still singing!”
Adrian looked at Claire, a genuine, breathtaking smile illuminating his handsome face.
“It will always sing for you, little one,” Adrian said softly.
Claire stepped closer, tears of relief and happiness overflowing her eyes. “Is it over?”
“It’s over, Claire,” Adrian said, reaching out with his free hand to pull her into his side. “The Genovese family is gone. Mason will never see the light of day again. The estate... my business... everything is clean now.”

“What happens now?” Claire asked softly, resting her head against his chest.
Adrian kissed the top of her head gently. “Now, we build castles.”
