Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Ledger

In the underground security vault beneath the mansion, Adrian stared at the glowing monitors displaying the estate's encrypted network traffic. Marcus stood behind him, cross-referencing timestamps.
“The leak came from inside this building,” Marcus said quietly. “An IP address registered to the estate’s secondary server sent an encrypted file to an anonymous IP in Manhattan at 8:15 PM. That was ten minutes before the raid.”
“Where was Charles at 8:15 PM?” Adrian asked.
“He was in the main study,” Marcus replied. “He claims he was reviewing the staff payroll ledgers.”
Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, his jaw clenched tightly. Charles Reddick had been his father’s right-hand man. He had wiped Adrian’s scraped knees when he was five years old. He had managed the Moretti family’s legitimate and illegitimate wealth for over thirty years. To suspect Charles was to question the entire foundation of Adrian’s life.
“Find out who owned the receiving server in Manhattan,” Adrian commanded. “And Marcus... keep a two-man security team outside the east wing at all times. If anyone so much as steps toward Claire’s room without my express permission, drop them.”
Meanwhile, up in the east wing, Claire couldn't sleep. She sat in the rocking chair beside Lily’s bed, watching her daughter breathe softly. The tension in the house was suffocating. Every floorboard creak sounded like an intruder.
At 2:00 AM, a light tap sounded at the nursery door.
Claire froze, clutching a heavy brass candlestick from the nightstand. She tiptoed to the door and looked through the peephole. Standing outside was Charles Reddick, dressed impeccably in his gray suit, holding a silver tray with a warm glass of milk and a plate of cookies.
Claire cautiously cracked the door open, keeping the chain latch engaged. “Mr. Reddick?”
“Good evening, Claire,” Charles said, offering a warm, grandfatherly smile. “I noticed the lights were still on. I thought you and little Lily might like a late-night snack. It must be stressful with all the commotion outside.”
“Thank you, Charles, but Lily is sleeping,” Claire said, keeping her voice neutral.
Charles looked past her, his sharp blue eyes scanning the nursery. “A lovely room, isn't it? Mr. Moretti has certainly gone out of his way for you. In thirty years, I have never seen him allow an outsider so close to his inner circle.”
There was a strange, subtle edge to his voice that made the hairs on the back of Claire’s neck stand up.
“Mr. Moretti has been very generous,” Claire replied carefully.

“Generosity in our line of work can be a dangerous distraction, my dear,” Charles said softly. He stepped back and smiled again. “Get some sleep, Claire. Things are going to become very chaotic around here very soon. You wouldn't want the little girl getting caught in the crossfire.”
As Charles walked down the dimly lit hallway, Claire slowly closed the door, her heart pounding. The kindly old manager’s words didn't sound like advice. They sounded like a threat.
