Chapter 6 - A Masked Threat

The days turned into weeks, and the line between my old life and this high-stakes world began to blur.
By day, I managed Luca’s public schedule, attending high-level corporate negotiations, managing hotel logistics, and learning the inner workings of his vast financial empire. By night, I returned to the estate, where Luca slowly let down his guard. I saw the man behind the myth—the man who patiently helped Noah build Lego castles on the living room rug, who poured me wine after long fourteen-hour workdays, and who listened with genuine empathy as I talked about my late husband and the struggles I had faced alone.
An undeniable tension was growing between us. It wasn't just gratitude; it was a deep, burning chemistry that flared every time his hand brushed mine, or every time his protective dark eyes held my gaze across a crowded room.
However, the threat of Julian Vance and his New York backers remained a dark cloud over our heads.
On a chilly Friday evening, Luca hosted the annual Marquette Charity Ball in the main ballroom of the hotel. It was a high-society event filled with politicians, billionaires, and media outlets. I wore an emerald green silk dress that Luca had personally selected for me, my hair pinned up in an elegant updo.
"You look breathtaking, Rachel," Luca said quietly as we stood on the balcony overlooking the ballroom floor. He looked impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo.
"Thank you, Luca," I said, feeling a blush warm my cheeks. "I still feel like an imposter in these clothes."
"You belong here far more than half these vultures," Luca said softly, reaching out to gently tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered against my jaw, his thumb brushing my skin. My heart hammered against my ribs, and for a second, I thought he was going to kiss me.
Before he could, Marco slipped onto the balcony, his face dark.
"Boss," Marco whispered. "We got a delivery at the front desk. Addressed directly to Ms. Carter."
Luca’s hand instantly dropped from my face, his expression turning cold. "What is it?"
Marco handed over a small, velvet-lined box. Luca took it, opening it cautiously.
Inside lay a silver charm bracelet—the exact same bracelet my late husband had given me, which I had pawned six months ago to pay for Noah’s medical bills. Attached to it was a small card with a typed message:
“A mother’s past is never truly sold. Bring Luca to the docks tonight, or the little bear doesn't make it to morning.”
My blood went completely ice-cold. I dropped my champagne glass, the crystal shattering across the stone floor.
"Noah..." I choked out, sheer panic seizing my throat. "Noah is at the estate!"
May you like
"Marco, call the house now!" Luca roared, pulling out his phone.
"I already did, Boss," Marco said, his voice trembling slightly. "The estate comms are down. Team Alpha isn't responding."
