Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

By 3:00 AM, a blacked-out SUV escorted us through a subterranean tunnel beneath the Grand Marquette and straight to the gates of an sprawling estate in Beacon Hill. High stone walls, iron gates, and armed guards disguised as groundskeepers surrounded the property.

To Noah, it was a palace. To me, it was a gilded cage.

The guest suite we were given was larger than my entire two-bedroom apartment. Rich velvet curtains, plush carpets, and a king-sized bed awaited us. A female staff member named Rosa—warm-eyed and soft-spoken—had already placed brand-new clothes for Noah and me in the closet, complete with toys, books, and children's pajamas.

"Mr. Romano thought the boy might like these," Rosa said kindly, pointing to a giant plush bear sitting on the armchair.

"Thank you, Rosa," I murmured, holding Noah close as he yawned, his energy finally depleted.

Once Noah was tucked safely into the massive bed, I couldn't sleep. I stood by the grand floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the manicured gardens illuminated by soft landscape lights. The reality of my situation weighed heavily on my chest. Just twelve hours ago, I was struggling to buy cereal. Now, I was living under the roof of Boston’s most feared underworld kingpin.

A soft knock at the open door broke my thoughts.

Luca stood in the doorway, dressed in a silk robe over a dark t-shirt and trousers. He looked less like the intimidating boss of the Grand Marquette and more like a man carrying the weight of an empire on his shoulders.

"He sleeps deeply," Luca observed, looking past me toward the bed.

"He’s exhausted," I said defensively. "He’s only four."

Luca walked in slowly, keeping a respectful distance. "My father brought me into this world when I was five. I remember the exact moment I realized our lives were different from normal people. I saw a man pulled out of a car in front of our house. My father told me it was just a game."

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.

"Because I don't intend for Noah to ever learn that game," Luca replied, his eyes fixed on mine. "You think I brought you here to control you, Rachel. But the truth is, the man who sent Noah upstairs tonight was targeted at me. A traitor within my own organization used your innocent child to send a message. I won't allow an innocent child to pay for my war."

"Who was the man in the red tie?" I asked, remembering Noah’s words.

Luca’s expression darkened slightly. "His name is Julian Vance. He is a senior executive on my hotel board. And as of an hour ago, he has vanished."

"Julian Vance..." I swallowed hard. I recognized the name. He was one of the major investors who frequently stayed at the penthouse level. "Why would he do that?"

"Because Vance believes my family has owned Boston for too long," Luca said, stepping closer. "He is backed by a syndicate out of New York. They want the Grand Marquette. They want our shipping lines. And they thought by creating chaos tonight, they could force my hand."

"And now?"

"Now, we hunt," Luca said simply. "Tomorrow morning, you start your new position as my executive coordinator. You will sit in my meetings. You will walk by my side. Every person in this city needs to see that Luca Romano protects what is his."

My breath hitched at his choice of words. Protects what is his.

May you like

"I am not yours, Mr. Romano," I said, holding my ground despite the intense heat rising in my chest.

Luca looked down at me, his gaze dropping to my lips for a split second before returning to my eyes. A faint, dangerous smile touched his lips. "Not yet, Ms. Carter. But in this city, everyone belongs to someone. And you are under my roof now."
