Chapter 3 - An Unholy Alliance

The next hour was a blur of shadows, hushed commands, and the terrifying reality of a world I never knew existed. The heavy mahogany doors of the library remained closed, but the muffled thud of footsteps and muffled gunshots echoed through the thick structure of the building. Noah had fallen asleep against my lap, completely exhausted by the sheer stress of the night and oblivious to the war waging outside.

When the library doors finally swung open, I flinched, pulling Noah deeper into the kneehole of the desk.

Luca walked in. His charcoal sweater was gone, leaving him in a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. There was a smear of dark soot across his left forearm, and his tie was loosened, but otherwise, he looked completely unbothered.

"It’s over," Luca said, his voice deep and steady. He walked over to his desk, poured two fingers of amber liquid from a crystal decanter into a short glass, and took a slow sip. "You can come out, Ms. Carter."

I crawled out slowly, my knees trembling so hard I could barely stand. "Who were those people? Were they after my son?"

"No," Luca said, setting the glass down. "They were after a leverage point. They knew I was hosting a high-profile event tonight. They knew security would be stretched thin between the lower gala and my private quarters. Sending your son up here was a distraction to test our response time. They wanted to see if I had grown soft."

"And did they?" I whispered.

Luca looked at me, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. "The men who came through the alley are currently being questioned in a soundproof basement three floors below us. They won't be testing my perimeter again."

I swallowed hard. "I need to take Noah and leave. I’ll quit my job. I’ll pack our bags. We’ll leave Boston."

"With what money?" Luca asked plainly.

The question hit me like a physical blow. I froze.

"I know who you are, Rachel Carter," Luca continued, pulling out a thin leather folder from his desk and tossing it onto the table. "Rachel Evelyn Carter. Age twenty-nine. Widowed two years ago when your husband, David, was killed in a hit-and-run on Route 9. You work two jobs, owe forty-two thousand dollars in accumulated medical debt and unpaid rent, and your bank account currently holds eighty-four dollars and seventeen cents."

My face burned with shame and anger. "You investigated me?"

"The moment a strange child walked into my private residence, my team pulled every record attached to you," Luca said smoothly. "You aren't a plant. You aren't working for the Moretti family or the Irish syndicate. You are simply an exhausted, desperate mother who made a dangerous mistake by bringing her child to work."

"I had no choice!" I yelled, tears streaming down my face. "I have no safety net! No parents, no husband, no one! I am doing everything I can just to keep a roof over my four-year-old son's head!"

"I know," Luca said quiet softly. He stepped around the desk, stopping just inches from me. He was tall—at least six-foot-two—and radiated an undeniable power. Yet, there was no malice in his eyes. "Which is why I am going to make you an offer."

"An offer?"

"The people who staged this breach tonight know that your son was in my penthouse. To the streets, to my rivals, anyone associated with me becomes a target. If you step out of this hotel tonight, you and Noah will be hunted as leverage against me."

"Why would they think I matter to you?!" I practically screamed. "You don't even know me!"

"Because I read him a bedtime story," Luca said, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk touching the corner of his lips. "Because the staff saw you run up to my elevator. Word travels fast in this city, Ms. Carter. In Boston, perception is reality."

He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a low, commanding rumble. "So here is my proposition. You and Noah move into the estate in Beacon Hill tonight. You will be protected by my men twenty-four hours a day. In exchange, you will act as my personal assistant within the hotel operations. I will pay off your debt, cover Noah’s schooling, and give you a salary that ensures you never have to choose between a paycheck and your child ever again."

May you like

I stared at him, my heart hammering against my ribs. "You want me to become a mobster's fake employee?"

"I am a businessman, Ms. Carter," Luca corrected softly. "And right now, the safest place in this city for your son is right beside me."
