Chapter 9 - The Final Test

Their quiet bliss, however, was soon challenged by the ruthless social hierarchy of New York high society.

News of Julian Cross romantic involvement with his former housekeeper leaked to the elite inner circles. At the annual Metropolitan Philanthropy Gala—the biggest high-society event of the winter—Julian arrived with Abby on his arm.

She looked stunning, wearing an elegant emerald-green silk gown selected by Julian, her hair styled in a graceful updo, holding her mother’s feather duster wrapped subtly in a silk scarf inside her clutch—a grounding reminder of who she was.

Yet, as they walked through the grand ballroom, whispers and sneers followed them.

Victoria Vance, the socialite sister of the incarcerated Carter Vance, stepped into their path, surrounded by a court of wealthy heiresses.

"Julian, darling," Victoria sneered loudly, eyeing Abby’s dress with disdain. "We all knew you were eccentric, but bringing the staff as your date? Is this a charity project, or did you simply run out of real women?"

The surrounding crowd snickered softly.

Julian’s eyes flashed with lethal fury. He stepped forward to destroy Victoria verbally, but Abby placed a gentle, firm hand on his arm, stepping up beside him.

She held her head high, her voice ringing clear and confident through the quieted ballroom.

"Miss Vance," Abby said smoothly, her eyes calm and unwavering. "A dress can be bought with stolen money, and status can be inherited without merit. But class, integrity, and respect are earned through how you treat people who can do nothing for you. Judging by your behavior tonight, you are far poorer than I ever was."

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Victoria’s face turned bright red with humiliation, unable to utter a single word as several prominent board members nodded in quiet approval of Abby’s sharp, dignified response.

Julian looked down at Abby, his heart exploding with pride and profound love.

He didn't say a word to Victoria. Instead, he took Abby by the hand, led her to the center of the grand dance floor under the giant crystal chandelier, and took her into his arms as the orchestra began to play a slow, sweeping waltz.

"You are incredible, Abigail Mercer," Julian whispered, spinning her effortlessly across the floor as every eye in the room watched them in awe.

May you like

"I just told the truth," Abby smiled, resting her cheek against his shoulder.

"No," Julian murmured, kissing her forehead gently. "You showed them what true nobility looks like."
