Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

When Abby arrived at the Cross Tower at 7:00 AM the following morning, the agency supervisor was waiting for her in the service lobby, holding a sleek gold-embossed access card.

"You're moving up, Mercer," the supervisor said, eyeing Abby with a mixture of envy and suspicion. "Mr. Cross’s personal assistant called last night. He specifically requested you for full-time residence maintenance. That means seventy hours a week, double pay, and full access to the penthouse living quarters."

Abby stared at the shiny card in her hand. "He requested me? But... I've only cleaned his floor twice. I've never even spoken to Mr. Cross."

"Well, you must have left his crystal spot-free," the woman shrugged. "Don't mess this up, Abby. Men like Julian Cross don't give second chances."

When the private elevator doors opened into the three-story penthouse, the atmosphere felt entirely different than it had the day before. The heavy velvet curtains were pulled back, flooding the minimalist marble interior with the cold morning sunlight of the Manhattan skyline.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a porcelain cup of black coffee, was Julian Cross.

It was the first time Abby had seen him in person. He was taller than he appeared on the agency profiles, clad in a perfectly tailored charcoal-gray suit, his dark hair combed back smoothly. His eyes, sharp and intense like polished slate, locked onto hers the moment she stepped off the elevator.

"Miss Mercer," his voice rolled through the room—deep, smooth, and laced with absolute authority.

"Good morning, Mr. Cross," Abby said, bowing her head slightly and gripping her cleaning cart tightly. "I... I was told you requested my services full-time. I'll make sure the estate is kept to your exact standards."

Julian didn't answer immediately. He took a slow sip of his coffee, walking toward her with measured, silent steps. The air around him felt charged with an overwhelming pressure, as if he occupied every cubic inch of space in the vast room.

He stopped just three feet from her.

"I am a particular man, Abigail," Julian said softly, his gaze dropping to the old feather duster resting in her cart. "I value absolute precision. I value order. But above all else, I value absolute transparency."

"I understand, sir."

Julian reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a thin, silver key. He held it out between two fingers.

"This key opens the wall safe in the private study," Julian said, watching her eyes intently. "It contains duplicate keys to the property, sensitive corporate documents, and roughly half a million dollars in liquid bearer bonds. I leave it on the desk every Wednesday morning while I attend board meetings at the Cross Financial Center."

He extended his hand, offering the key to her.

Abby looked at the gleaming piece of silver, then up into Julian’s dark, unreadable eyes. She felt a strange prickle at the back of her neck—a instinct telling her that this was not a normal assignment.

"Sir," Abby said quietly, her voice steady despite the rapid pounding of her heart. "With all due respect, I don't need access to your safe. My contract only requires me to clean the common areas and the primary suites. You should keep that key with you."

Julian’s eyes flared with a sudden, dangerous intensity. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could smell the subtle cedarwood and leather scent of his cologne.

"Are you refusing a direct request from your employer, Miss Mercer?" he asked, his voice dropping an octave, silk wrapping around razor wire.

"No, Mr. Cross," Abby replied, staring directly into his eyes without flinching. "I am protecting us both. You don't know me yet. And until you do, I prefer not to hold the keys to your fortune."

For five agonizing seconds, neither of them moved.

Then, the corner of Julian Cross’s lip twitched upward in a slow, lethal, intrigued smile.

"We'll see how long your caution lasts, Abigail," he murmured, tossing the key casually onto the marble counter beside her. "We will see."
