Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Storm

The rain was pouring in torrents over Queens as Julian’s sleek black Maybach pulled up in front of Abby’s dilapidated apartment building.

Julian stepped out into the storm, ignoring Marcus’s offer of an umbrella. He marched up the creaky, dimly lit wooden stairs of the apartment complex, his heart pounding harder than it ever had during a billion-dollar takeover.

He reached apartment 4B and knocked firmly.

The door opened slowly. Abby stood there, wearing an oversized sweater, her hair tied back in a loose bun. Her eyes were rimmed with red, her face pale and exhausted.

When she saw Julian standing in her hallway, soaked in rain, her expression instantly locked into steel.

"You're trespassing, Mr. Cross," Abby said coldly, attempting to close the door.

Julian caught the edge of the frame with his bare hand. "Abigail, please. Don't close the door. I know the truth."

Abby froze.

"We found the secondary entry logs," Julian said, his voice trembling slightly—a sound so foreign to him that it shocked even himself. "Harrison Reed framed you. He used a master code to access my terminal while you were in the east wing. The money sent to your brother came from an offshore account linked directly to Carter Vance."

Abby swallowed hard, her chest heaving as tears threatened to spill over again. "So... you know I'm not a thief."

"I know you are the most honorable person I have ever met," Julian said, stepping into the apartment despite the small space. He looked around at the leaking ceiling, the peeling wallpaper, the small plastic bucket catching rainwater—the bleak reality of her daily sacrifice.

"I was wrong, Abigail," Julian said softly, coming to a stop before her. "My entire life, I believed everyone had a price because everyone I ever knew proved me right. I built a fortress of cynicism to protect myself. But when I looked at you... I wanted to believe in something better. And when the evidence pointed to you, I panicked because the thought of you being corrupt hurt more than losing my entire empire."

Abby stared at him, her lips trembling. "You destroyed my name, Julian. My brother is terrified. My father is stressed beyond measure. You can't just fix this with an apology."

"I know," Julian replied, pulling a thick envelope from his inner coat pocket. "Which is why Harrison Reed and Carter Vance were arrested by federal marshals twenty minutes ago. I personally held a press conference at 5:00 PM clearing your name entirely."

He handed her the envelope. She opened it to find a public release, signed by the Attorney General, fully exonerating her and publicly thanking her for her assistance in exposing corporate espionage.

"And there's one more thing," Julian added, looking deep into her eyes. "I bought this building today."

Abby blinked. "You... what?"

"I bought the entire housing block," Julian said smoothly. "Renovations begin tomorrow morning. Every tenant is being relocated to luxury temporary housing—fully paid—and your father’s medical team at New York Presbyterian has been expanded to include the top pulmonary specialists in the country. Everything is settled."

Abby gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. "Julian... why would you do that?"

"Because," Julian stepped closer, his hand gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look into his dark, soulful eyes, "I promised myself I would never let you suffer for my mistakes again."
