Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Syndicate

The fallout from Vanessa Sterling’s treachery rocked the entire Midwest underworld.

Over the next seventy-two hours, Gabriel moved with ruthless efficiency. With the red ledger now in his possession, he exposed every corrupt politician, judge, and mob captain who had been working with the Moretti syndicate.

By Thursday evening, the Moretti family had been completely dismantled. Their assets were seized, their leaders arrested or forced to flee the country.

The Romano empire was no longer a target—it was an unquestioned fortress.

Inside the Lake Geneva mansion, the atmosphere had transformed completely. The cold, sterile, terrifying castle was suddenly filled with life. The heavy iron chains in the courtyard were removed. The grooming room was stripped of its steel restraints and replaced with soft rubber mats, warm blankets, and open doors.

Calvin Pike and Vanessa Sterling were handed over to federal authorities along with a mountain of evidence detailing their illegal smuggling operations, ensuring both would spend the rest of their lives in high-security federal penitentiaries.

On a quiet Friday afternoon, Evelyn stood in the newly renovated laundry room. The sun was streaming through the high windows, casting warm golden light across the polished tiles.

Titan lay on a large, custom-made velvet bed in the corner, chewing contentedly on a large marrow bone. His bad hip had been operated on by the best veterinary surgeon in Chicago—a surgery paid for by Gabriel—and he was recovering rapidly, no longer walking with a limp.

The door opened, and Gabriel walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual sharp black suit or carrying a weapon. He wore a simple grey cashmere sweater and dark jeans, looking relaxed and younger than he had in years.

"The board approved the final restructuring today," Gabriel said, leaning against the doorframe with a soft smile. "The Romano Foundation is now officially a legal real-estate and animal rescue philanthropy."

Evelyn turned around, holding a basket of clean towels. "Philanthropy? The men in Chicago won't like that."

"The men in Chicago no longer have a say," Gabriel said, stepping into the room. He took the heavy laundry basket from her hands and set it aside, taking her hands into his. "I promised myself a long time ago that if I ever found something worth protecting, I would burn the dark world down to keep it safe."

Evelyn looked into his warm eyes. "And did you find it?"

"I did," Gabriel whispered, kissing the palms of her hands. "I found a clumsy maid who wasn't afraid of monsters."
