Chapter 6 - The Traitor Within

Gabriel froze, his eyes locking onto Calvin. "Calvin. You’ve been with this estate for six years."
"And for six years you treated me like dirt!" Calvin spat, his thumb hovering over the red switch on the controller. "You paid me scraps while you built a billion-dollar empire! Vanessa offered me five million dollars to make sure Titan was aggressive enough to be put down, clearing the way for her men to strike!"
Evelyn realized the truth in an instant. "The injuries... the broken wrist from last fall... you were intentionally abusing Titan to make him untrainable!"
"Shut up, maid!" Calvin yelled. "I installed an ultrasonic frequency device inside Titan’s surgical collar six months ago. One press of this button releases a high-decibel pulse that drives dogs into a violent frenzy. He will tear both of you to pieces!"
Vanessa laughed wildly, pulling a small silver pistol from her jacket. "It’s over, Gabriel. Once Calvin activates the dog, Titan will attack you. My men will step in, kill the dog, and frame it as a tragic accident where your beloved monster finally snapped and killed you. I will take control of the family syndicate by morning."
Titan was whining now, backing away, pawing at his ears as if sensing the impending pain. The dog was terrified, caught between his loyalty to Evelyn and the agony he knew was coming.
"Calvin, don't do this," Evelyn begged, stepping out from behind Gabriel. "You know what that sound does to him! It hurts him!"
"Get back, Evelyn!" Gabriel commanded, trying to push her behind him.
"No!" Evelyn yelled, looking directly at Titan. She saw the absolute horror in the animal's eyes.
Calvin grinned sadistically and pressed the button.
A high-pitched, invisible wave of frequency filled the room. Titan let out a heartbreaking shriek of agony, dropping to his knees, thrashing his head against the floor as the mechanical pulse shattered his senses.
"Kill them, boy! Go!" Calvin screamed, pointing at Gabriel.
Titan rose, his eyes wild, bloodshot, his jaws snapping wildly at the air. He turned toward Gabriel, a monster unleashed by pain.
"Gabriel, don't shoot him!" Evelyn cried out, placing herself directly between the charging 150-pound beast and Gabriel’s gun.
"Evelyn, move!" Gabriel roared.

Evelyn didn't move. Instead, she dropped to her knees right in front of the rushing Cane Corso. She opened her arms wide, completely defenceless, exposing her neck to the terrifying creature.
"Titan!" she screamed over the painful hum. "Look at me! It's Evelyn! Look at me!"
