Chapter 7 - The Bond of Blood

The massive dog leaped through the air, jaws wide, teeth glistening under the library chandelier.

Gabriel reached out, screaming her name, ready to throw his body in front of the jaws.

Titan slammed into Evelyn, bringing her down onto the carpet. His heavy paws pinned her shoulders. His jaws snapped inches from her throat. Hot breath washed over her cheeks.

Evelyn didn't flinch. She didn't scream. She looked straight into the dog's bloodshot, agony-filled eyes and gently wrapped her arms around his massive, trembling neck.

"I’ve got you," she whispered softly into his ear, ignoring the agony of the sound frequency ringing faintly in her own ears. "You're safe. I won't let them hurt you. Fight it, Titan. Choose me."

Titan’s muscles locked. His jaws hovered over her skin, vibrating violently. The ultrasonic pulse roared through his head, screaming at his nervous system to destroy everything in sight.

For three agonizing seconds, the fate of the entire Romano empire hung on the choice of a traumatized dog.

Slowly, the wild red tint in Titan’s eyes vanished. The growl in his chest softened into a desperate, mournful whimper.

Instead of tearing into her throat, Titan buried his massive head into the crook of Evelyn’s neck, letting out a pitiful cry, surrendering entirely to her warmth.

Calvin stared in absolute shock. "What... what is this?! Kill her! ATTACK!" He hammered the button on the remote frantically.

Gabriel didn't wait another second.

With a roar of fury, Gabriel lunged forward. He struck Calvin with a brutal left hook, sending the handler crashing into the heavy mahogany desk. The controller flew from Calvin's hand, shattering into pieces against the stone fireplace.

The tormenting sound stopped instantly.

Vanessa panicked, raising her silver pistol to shoot Evelyn.

"Vanessa!" Gabriel’s voice echoed like thunder.

Vanessa turned her head just in time to see Gabriel close the distance. He grabbed her wrist, twisting it until the gun dropped, then hurled her back into the secret tunnel entrance, where Victor and four armed guards were already waiting, weapons drawn.

"Secure them," Gabriel commanded, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with absolute vengeance. "Take Calvin to the basement. I will deal with him personally later."

Victor grabbed Calvin by the collar, dragging him away, while two guards handcuffed Vanessa, who was screaming curses at the top of her lungs as she was hauled into the dark corridor.

The room fell quiet again.

Gabriel turned around slowly. Evelyn was still on the floor, holding Titan tightly in her arms. The giant dog was trembling, his head resting heavily on her chest, completely exhausted.

Gabriel walked over, dropping to his knees beside them. He looked down at the woman who had just risked her life based on nothing but faith and love.

He reached out, his hand shaking as he gently lifted her chin.

"You're insane," Gabriel whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek—the first tear he had shed in thirty years. "You could have died."

"He chose us," Evelyn whispered, tears falling down her face as she smiled. "He chose us, Gabriel."

Gabriel leaned in and pulled Evelyn into a fierce, protective embrace, pressing his lips firmly against hers.
