Chapter 3 - Into the Lion’s Den

"Get away from them!" Hannah yelled, brandishing the heavy marble statue. She shoved the three crying girls behind her bed, using her own body as a shield.

Viktor Moretti stepped into the moonlight filtering through the window. He was an older man with silver hair, a scarred face, and a cold smile. "You must be the waitress. Dominic’s little charity project. Drop the statue before my men put a bullet through your knee."

"If you touch these girls, Dominic will hunt you down and kill everyone you've ever known!" Hannah spat, her hands shaking, though her eyes blazed with fury.

Viktor chuckled, a dry, raspy sound. "Dominic is currently surrounded by forty of my men down at the docks. He’s busy. Now, hand over the triplets. My daughter wants her children back."

"Their mother left them!" Hannah screamed. "She terrorized them!"

"She was executing a business strategy," Viktor corrected coldly. He gestured to his men. "Grab them."

Two mercenary guards lunged forward. Hannah didn't hesitate. She swung the heavy statue with all her strength, striking the first guard right across the jaw. He went down with a heavy groan, bleeding profusely. But the second guard grabbed Hannah by her hair, slamming her against the wall.

Pain exploded behind Hannah’s eyes. "Run!" she screamed to the girls. "Lily, Emma, Grace, RUN!"

"MAMA!" Grace shrieked. It wasn't a baby word anymore; it was a desperate scream of agony.

The guard slapped Hannah across the face, throwing her onto the ground. Just as Viktor reached out to snatch Emma, the heavy oak doors of the master suite blew off their hinges with a thunderous blast.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Gunfire tore through the room. Viktor’s second guard dropped dead instantly.

Dominic Vale stepped through the smoke, covered in rain and fresh blood, his eyes glowing with unholy rage. He fired twice more, striking Viktor in the shoulder. Viktor shrieked in pain, ducking behind the doorway, returning fire wild as he retreated into the dark hallway.

"Marco! Secure the perimeter!" Dominic roared into his radio.

Dominic dropped his weapon and fell to his knees beside Hannah. His hands were shaking as he pulled her up. "Hannah! Look at me. Are you hit?"

"I'm... I'm fine," she gasped, clutching her bruised cheek. "The girls... check the girls!"

Dominic turned. The three children were huddled in the corner. When they saw Dominic, instead of shrinking away like they usually did, Lily scrambled forward, throwing her small arms around Dominic’s neck.

"Dada!" Lily sobbed into his chest. "Dada!"

Dominic froze. His breath caught in his throat. Tears welled up in the fearsome mob boss’s eyes as he wrapped his massive arms around his daughter, pulling Emma and Grace into the embrace as well. "I'm here. Daddy's here. I've got you."

He looked over the girls' shoulders at Hannah, who was sitting on the floor, bleeding from her lip, smiling through her pain.

In that moment, something fundamental changed in Dominic’s dark heart.

Twenty minutes later, the mansion was crawling with dozens of Vale enforcers. Viktor Moretti had escaped in a backup vehicle, but his raid had been entirely neutralized.

In the medical wing, a doctor was patching up the cut on Hannah’s face. Dominic stood by the door, watching her intently.

"You took a hit for them," Dominic said quietly after the doctor left. "You fought off an armed mercenary with a statue."

"They are two years old, Dominic," Hannah said, wincing as she moved her jaw. "I would have died before letting that monster touch them."

Dominic walked over and sat on the edge of her examination bed. He reached out, his thick, calloused thumb gently wiping a drop of dried blood from her chin. His touch was surprisingly soft, almost worshipful.

"Nobody has ever fought for my children like that," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Not their mother. Not my own family. Just you."

"They deserve to be loved, Dominic. Real love, not mob politics."

Dominic looked into her eyes, his face inches from hers. "You aren't a hostage anymore, Hannah. The gates are open. If you want to leave tonight, I will have Marco drive you anywhere in the world. I'll give you ten million dollars. You can start over."

Hannah looked at him, surprised. "You're letting me go?"

"You proved your loyalty. You don't deserve to be trapped in my war," Dominic said, though his eyes betrayed the gut-wrenching pain of offering her freedom. "If you stay, Viktor will come back. My mother will scheme. Your life will be in constant danger."

Hannah thought of her empty apartment in Queens. She thought of her lonely life. Then she thought of three little girls who had just called him "Dada" for the first time, and who called her "Mama."

"I'm not leaving," Hannah said firmly.

Dominic stared at her, stunned. "Why?"

May you like

"Because they need a mother," Hannah whispered. "And maybe... maybe you need someone who isn't afraid of you."

Dominic’s breathing hitched. Without another word, he leaned in, cupping her face in his hands, and pressed his lips to hers in a fierce, passionate kiss that sent electricity running through Hannah’s veins.
