Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Shadows

Morning came with a harsh light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling bulletproof windows. Hannah woke to the sound of tiny footsteps. The three girls were sitting in a circle on the rug, whispering quietly to one another.
Hannah sat up, breathless. Whispering.
When they saw her awake, Emma scrambled up onto the bed, pointing at the window. "Sun," she squeaked out, her voice raspy from disuse.
"Sun," Hannah repeated, tears springing to her eyes. She hugged Emma close. "Yes! Good job, sweetie!"
A heavy knock sounded at the door. Dominic walked in, dressed in a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate dark tattoos creeping up his forearms. He held a silver tray with fresh coffee, eggs, and pancakes.
"I made the kitchen prepare this," Dominic said, placing the tray on the bedside table. "How are they?"
"Emma just said 'sun'," Hannah said, smiling softly.
Dominic stopped in his tracks. He looked at Emma, his eyes shining with an emotion he tried desperately to hide. He knelt by the bed. "Emma... can you say it for Daddy?"
Emma shrank back, ducking behind Hannah’s arm.
Dominic’s face fell. The rejection hit him like a physical blow. He stood up straight, burying his hands in his pockets to hide his clenched fists. "I see."
"Dominic, give them time," Hannah said gently, reaching out to touch his sleeve without thinking. "They're traumatized. What happened to their biological mother?"
The air in the room instantly turned sub-zero. Dominic’s eyes flared with a dangerous, dark fire. "Her name is never to be spoken in this house."
"If I'm going to help them, I need to know why they stopped talking!" Hannah demanded, refusing to back down.
"She abandoned them," Dominic snarled, his voice low and dangerous. "She was a spy sent by the Syndicate’s rival family, the Morettis. She used me, had my children, and the day they turned one, she tried to sell them back to her father. I stopped her. She fled the country, and my daughters haven't uttered a sound since the day she dragged them out of their nursery in the middle of the night."
Hannah gasped, her heart breaking for the innocent little girls. They weren't just mute; they were broken by betrayal and terror.
"They think every woman is going to leave them," Hannah realized aloud.
"And you won't?" Dominic challenged, stepping closer to her, hovering over her until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "You're a hostage here, Hannah. The moment you see an open door, you'll run."
"I am not a monster, Dominic," Hannah replied, standing her ground, her brown eyes locking with his piercing dark ones. "I won't abandon children."
Before Dominic could reply, his chief bodyguard, Marco, burst into the room without knocking, his face grim. "Boss. We have a problem at the docks. It’s Viktor Moretti. He’s pushing into North Territory, and he’s claiming he has information about the girls."
Dominic’s entire posture changed. The protective father disappeared, replaced instantly by the cold-blooded mafia lord. He drew a custom silver pistol from his holster, checking the chamber with terrifying efficiency.
"Guard the wing," Dominic commanded Marco. "Nobody enters. Nobody leaves. If my mother tries to touch Hannah or the children, lock her in her quarters."
He turned to Hannah, his eyes dark. "Stay in this room."
"Dominic, wait—"
"Stay!" he roared, before sweeping out of the bedroom, his guards trailing behind him like lethal shadows.
Hours passed. The estate was eerily quiet. Hannah spent the afternoon playing with the girls, helping them piece together wooden puzzles. Little by little, Grace said "Dog," and Lily pointed to a red block and said "Red." Every small word felt like a monumental victory.
Around 8:00 PM, the power in the mansion suddenly cut out.
The room went pitch black. The security alarms didn't blare—they were completely silenced.
The triplets began to scream in terror.
"Shh, shh, I'm here!" Hannah gathered all three into her arms in the middle of the dark room. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She remembered what Marco said—the security was top-tier. Power cuts didn't just happen.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway. Slow, deliberate heavy boots.
The bedroom door handle slowly turned.
Hannah grabbed a heavy marble statue from the nightstand, holding it above her head, her body trembling with adrenaline as the door swung open.
A tall figure stepped through the darkness, flashlight beaming into Hannah’s eyes.

"Put the statue down, sweetheart," a smooth, unfamiliar voice with a heavy Italian accent mocked. "I’m not here to hurt you. I’m just here to reclaim my son’s bloodline."
It wasn't Dominic. It was Viktor Moretti—and behind him stood three armed mercenaries.
