Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The black SUV pulled away from the rain-slicked alley of Bellafonte, slicing through the Manhattan storm. Hannah sat in the back row, her hands trembling in her lap while the steady, quiet breathing of three toddlers filled the leather interior. Emma was asleep on her left, Lily was clutching her sleeve, and Grace had her thumb firmly stuck in her mouth, her gaze locked onto Hannah as if the universe would dissolve if she looked away.
Across from them sat Dominic Vale.
In the dim light of the tinted windows, his face looked like it had been carved out of stone. He hadn’t spoken a single word since they left the alley, but his presence filled the entire vehicle like heavy smoke.
"Where are you taking me?" Hannah asked, her voice tight. "My apartment is in Queens. I have a night shift entering data. If I miss it, I lose the roof over my head."
Dominic didn't look up from his phone. "Your rent is paid for the next five years. Your dad's remaining medical debts were settled twenty minutes ago."
Hannah froze, the blood rushing to her ears. "What?"
"I don't like lingering loose ends," Dominic said coldly, finally turning his dark eyes toward her. "You need money. I need my daughters to speak, to heal, and to survive. You will be compensated fifty thousand dollars a week to stay at my estate as their primary caregiver."
"You think you can just buy a human being?" Hannah’s chest heaved. "You dragged me out of my job! You kidnapped me!"
"I took an opportunity to protect my family," he corrected smoothly. "Call it what you want. But look at them, Hannah."
Hannah looked down. Grace had fallen fast asleep, resting her tiny cheek against Hannah’s thigh. Lily’s small fingers were still woven into the fabric of Hannah’s worn apron. For two years, these children had lived in a silent, terrifying world of their own. Now, they were clinging to her as if she were their anchor.
"They've never touched anyone like that," Dominic said softly, a rare vulnerability breaking through his armor for a fraction of a second. "Not their nannies. Not their doctors. Not even me."
An hour later, the SUV passed through massive iron gates surrounded by high concrete walls topped with security cameras and armed guards. They had arrived at the Vale Estate—a sprawling, fortress-like mansion secluded in the hills of Long Island.
When the car door opened, a team of staff and armed men stood waiting. But as soon as a maid reached out to help carry Grace, the toddler woke up and let out a blood-curdling shriek. Within seconds, Lily and Emma joined in, their faces turning red, thrashing against their car seats.
"Get back!" Dominic barked at the staff.
The girls’ screams echoed in the grand foyer of the mansion. Dominic tried to scoop Lily into his arms, but she pushed against his chest, hyperventilating, her eyes fixed entirely on Hannah.
"Hannah," Dominic commanded, his voice laced with desperate authority. "Fix it."
Hannah pushed past him, dropping to her knees on the cold marble floor. "Hey... hey, sweethearts. I'm right here. Look at me."
She began to hum—a gentle, slow lullaby her late father used to sing to her when she couldn't sleep. Slowly, the deafening screams faded into small hiccups. Lily crawled out of the SUV directly into Hannah’s arms, burying her tear-stained face into her neck. Emma and Grace followed, crowding around her on the floor.
Dominic stood over them, his jaw tight. "They don't even let me hold them for more than two minutes," he murmured, his voice laced with bitter jealousy and profound awe.
"Because they're terrified of this place, and they're terrified of you," Hannah snapped, looking up at the feared mob boss with absolute fiercely protective eyes. "You built a fortress, Dominic, not a home."
Before Dominic could answer, a sharp, cold female voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.
"Is this the charity case you abducted from a pasta house, Dominic?"
Hannah looked up. Standing on the stairs was an older woman dressed in pristine white silk, her hair pinned back tightly. She carried an air of absolute malice. This was Eleanor Vale—Dominic’s mother and the ruthless matriarch of the Vale syndicate.
"Watch your tone, Mother," Dominic warned, his voice turning deadly cold. "Hannah is staying here."
"A waitress?" Eleanor sneered, descending the stairs slow and sharp as a knife. "The Vale bloodline is suffering, and your solution to your broken children is to bring a street rat into our house?"
Lily shrank against Hannah, letting out a small, whimpering sob.
Hannah stood up, carrying Lily on her hip while keeping Emma and Grace close to her legs. She stared straight into Eleanor’s vicious eyes. "I don't care who you think you are. But if you yell in front of these girls again, I will walk out those gates, and good luck getting them to say another word."
The entire room went dead silent. Dominic’s guards looked at each other in sheer terror—nobody talked to Eleanor Vale like that and lived.
Dominic, however, stepped in front of Hannah, shielding her from his mother’s furious glare. A faint, wicked curve touched the corner of his lips. "Show Miss Mercer to the master wing suite. Next to my room."
"Dominic!" Eleanor hissed. "She is a nobody!"
"She is the only person my daughters speak to," Dominic growled, leaning down to stare into his mother's eyes. "Which makes her the most important person in this house."

That night, Hannah lay in the luxurious bed of her massive room. The three triplets were sound asleep around her, refusing to lay in their own cribs. Across the hall, through the open door, she could see Dominic sitting at his desk, a glass of scotch in his hand, watching her and the girls through the shadows.
She was a prisoner in a golden cage, surrounded by danger, mob war, and cruel aristocrats. Yet, as she looked at the three innocent girls sleeping beside her, she knew she couldn't leave.
