Chapter 6: The First Warning

Three days after I brought Emily home, Margaret Prescott called me.
Her voice was still smooth, but I could hear the tension underneath.
“Colonel Hart, I think we got off on the wrong foot. Perhaps we should meet and discuss this like civilized people.”
I didn’t raise my voice.
“Mrs. Prescott, there is nothing to discuss. My daughter will be filing for divorce and full custody. If your son or any member of your family comes near her again, I will make sure the entire country knows exactly what kind of people the Prescotts really are.”
She laughed coldly.
“You think your little military career gives you that kind of power?”
I smiled even though she couldn’t see it.
“No,” I said. “I think twenty-three years of service, three combat deployments, and a Rolodex full of people who actually keep their promises gives me that kind of power. But feel free to test me.”

I hung up before she could reply.
