Chapter 2: The First Promise

I helped Emily into a wheelchair and wheeled her out of the hospital myself.
The Prescott family followed us into the parking lot, still smiling like they had already won.
Margaret called after me.
“Colonel Hart, think carefully before you do anything rash. My son has powerful friends.”
I stopped and turned.
The evening wind tugged at my uniform jacket.
I looked at Margaret Prescott the way I had once looked at enemy commanders across negotiation tables.
“Mrs. Prescott,” I said calmly, “I spent twenty-three years in the United States Army. I have led soldiers into combat zones where people tried to kill me every single day. I have buried friends and I have held dying men in my arms. Do you really believe your son’s connections frighten me?”
Margaret’s smile faltered for the first time.
I continued.
“You laid hands on my daughter. You threatened her life and the life of her unborn child. You locked her in a guest house like an animal. And now you stand here smiling as if this is a game you can win.”
I took one step closer.
“It is not a game. And I am not playing.”
Then I turned and wheeled Emily to my car.
