The next morning, I made three calls.

The first was to a general I had served under for eight years.

The second was to a federal prosecutor who owed me a favor from a joint operation five years earlier.

The third was to the best family law attorney in North Carolina — a woman who had once been my platoon leader’s wife.

By noon, I had a team.

By evening, we had a plan.
