Chapter 1 - The Hidden Past

The words echoed in my ear like a bomb detonation. “She used to do this to me.”
My grip on the steering wheel tightened until my knuckles turned bone-white. The engine of my car hummed beneath me, parked just three blocks from my house, but in that moment, I felt lightyears away, suspended in a nightmare.
"Natalie... what do you mean?" My voice was barely a whisper. "What did she do to you?"
On the line, my older sister choked back a sob. Natalie had moved out the day she turned eighteen and had maintained a cold, distant relationship with our mother ever since. I had always assumed Natalie was just rebellious, difficult, or ungrateful—exactly as Vivian had spent fifteen years telling me.
"When I was sixteen, I broke my ankle in a gymnastics fall," Natalie confessed, her voice trembling. "Mom told everyone she was staying home to nurse me. But when Dad went to work, she took my pain medicine, threw it down the heating vent, and told me that if I wanted a glass of water or food, I had to drag myself down the stairs on my hands and knees. She said pain was God’s way of teaching weak girls discipline. She made me feel crazy. She told me if I ever said a word, Dad would leave us and it would be my fault."
Cold disgust washed over me. Vivian wasn’t just a bitter mother-in-law. She was a calculated, sadist sociopath who targeted women when they were at their weakest.
"I have it all on video, Nat," I said, my teeth grinding together. "Everything she just did to Emma. She crushed her medication. She made her crawl for Oliver."
"Listen to me, Leo," Natalie snapped, her emotional breakdown suddenly shifting into fierce protectiveness. "You cannot just walk in there and yell at her. Vivian is a master manipulator. The second you show your hand without a bulletproof trap, she will destroy the evidence, call the police on you, and play the fragile grandmother who was 'verbally abused by her ungrateful son.' You need to get Emma and the baby out secretly right now."
"No," I replied, staring at the security footage playing on my dashboard screen. "If I just flee, she will track us down, spin her narrative to the family, and spend the rest of her life tormenting us. I’m not running. I’m going to ruin her."
Through the live camera feed, I watched Emma down on her knees on the hardwood floor, sobbing silently as she picked up the sharp glass shards with her bare hands. Vivian stood over her, casually adjusting her immaculate blouse, holding my screaming baby boy like a trophy.

"Hold on, Emma," I whispered to the screen. "Just hold on for ten more minutes."
I ended the call with Natalie, put the car in drive, and slammed on the gas.
