The evening air was crisp and clean, carrying the faint scent of pine and autumn leaves. I walked up the porch steps and sat down next to my mother. She looked tired, but the tension that had gripped her frail shoulders for months had melted away.

“Is she gone for good, son?” Mom asked softly, resting her hand over mine.

Maya handed me a glass of cold lemonade from the tray on the side table, smiling warmly.

“Well,” Maya said, leaning against the porch railing. “That certainly beats spending a quiet weekend watching television. What’s our official family status now?”

“Restored,” I said, clinking my glass against hers. “Completely and permanently restored.”

For the first time in over a year, the house felt like a home again. Not a gilded cage built on secrets and fear, but a sanctuary of truth, family, and survival.
