Chapter 3 - The Digital Blueprint of Betrayal

Before Chloe could muster another lie, my phone buzzed violently in my hand. It was a push notification from the home security app—an archival motion-detection log from three nights prior at 2:00 AM, while I was away on business in Chicago.

I tapped the notification. The video playback loaded instantly in high-definition color.

The timestamp read: October 14, 02:14 AM.

The camera showed the hallway outside the study. The front door unlocked with a digital key code only two people possessed: Chloe and me. The door swung open, and Chloe walked in wearing a silk robe, holding a wine glass. But she wasn't alone. Tucked close behind her was the man from the photograph.

As the video played with crisp audio, their voices filtered through the phone speaker into the walk-in closet:

“Is the old lady asleep?” the man asked, low and gravelly.

“She’s heavily sedated in the guest room,” Chloe replied casually. “She won't wake up until morning. Did you bring the secondary transfer papers?”

“Right here,” the man said, stepping under the chandelier, revealing his face clearly. “Once Liam signs off on the quarterly audit next week, we execute the secondary wire transfer through the shell company. By the time he realizes the corporate accounts are empty, we’ll be offshore.”

“And if he gets suspicious?” Chloe asked.

“We frame him for corporate embezzlement,” the man chuckled darkly. “We’ve already routed thirty thousand dollars into a dummy account under his social security number. The state fraud investigators will think he’s been skimming for six months.”

In the walk-in closet, silence reigned. I lowered my phone. Every piece of the puzzle clicked into place with horrifying precision—the missing corporate funds, the strange phone calls, the sudden pressure to sell my mother’s house.

“Corporate embezzlement,” I said quietly. “You didn't just want my mother’s estate. You wanted to send me to federal prison so you could inherit everything clean and clear with your little boyfriend.”

Chloe slid down the wall until she sat on the carpet, burying her face in her hands.

“Who is he, Chloe?” I demanded. “Give me his name right now, or I swear I will send these videos to the federal prosecutor’s office before the sun sets.”

“His name is Marcus Cole,” she sobbed. “He’s a corporate liquidator. We met at a charity gala six months ago...”
