Chapter 2 - The Secrets of the Master Closet

The master bedroom smelled heavily of lavender and expensive perfume—a carefully curated mask of domestic luxury masking a house built entirely on deception.
I pushed the sliding door of the walk-in closet open. Maya and Mom followed closely behind, while Chloe lingered at the threshold, her breathing shallow and erratic, her fingernails digging into the wooden doorframe until her knuckles turned ghostly white.
“Don’t you touch my things, Liam,” Chloe hissed, her voice trembling with rising hysteria. “If you tear apart my wardrobe over some paranoid delusion your sister cooked up—”
“Shut up, Chloe,” I said without looking back.
I knelt down on the plush carpet in the far corner of the closet, right beneath the built-in shelving unit where heavy seasonal blankets were stored. Tucked deep behind a row of storage bins sat a heavy, old-fashioned metal sewing box painted with faded floral patterns—an heirloom I hadn't seen in years.
I pulled it into the light. The brass clasp was unlatched.
My mother gasped softly, covering her mouth with her bruised hand as I flipped the lid open. Inside wasn't thread, needles, or buttons. It was a thick stack of legal documents bound with red rubber bands, three burner phones wrapped in rubber bands, a checkbook from an unknown corporate bank, and a heavy manila envelope stamped with the logo of a high-end downtown law firm.
I pulled out the top document. Across the header, bold text stared back at me: REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST & ASSET TRANSFER AGREEMENT. Grantor: Eleanor Vance (Incompetent/Disabled). Beneficiary: Chloe Vance.
My breath caught. It was a complete liquidation plan for my family’s estate, our savings, and my late father’s manufacturing business—all signed with a shaky, forged signature that poorly mimicked my mother’s handwriting.
“What is this?” I whispered, holding up the papers. “You forged Mom’s signature on a property transfer?”
Chloe stepped into the closet, her mask completely shattered. Tears welled in her eyes, but they were tears of pure rage.
“You don't understand how expensive things are, Liam!” she screamed, pointing wildly at the documents. “Your mother’s medical bills, the mortgage, my social obligations, the country club dues—you think your salary covers all of this? We were drowning!”
“We were living comfortably until you started buying luxury cars on credit!” I roared. “And you locked my mother in a room and starved her to get her thumbprint on these papers!”

“She agreed to it!” Chloe shrieked. “She doesn't even know what year it is half the time!”
“I know exactly what year it is,” my mother’s voice rang out from the doorway, steady and clear. Mom stepped into the closet, leaning on Maya, her eyes fixed on Chloe with an icy dignity. “I may be seventy-two, Chloe, but my mind is sharper than yours will ever be. You thought you could starve me into submission, force my thumb onto an ink pad while I slept, and steal everything my husband worked for.”
