Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Stand

Defeated, humiliated, and legally bankrupt, the remaining leaders of the Blackwood syndicate gathered in the dimly lit cellar of Blackwood House late that night.
The house above them was quiet. Most of the servants had quit after their paychecks bounced. The grand halls that had once hosted senators, syndicate heads, and billionaire shipping magnates were dark and cold.
Victor Hale sat at the oak table, a bottle of cheap scotch in front of him, his face twisted into an ugly, desperate sneer. Across from him sat Olivia, her eyes swollen from crying, her hair disheveled.
"It's over, Victor," Olivia whimpered, wrapping her arms around herself. "The bank seized the townhouses downtown. Adrian hasn't spoken to me in three days. He stays in his study drinking himself to death. We have nothing left."
"Shut up, you foolish girl!" Victor spat, slamming his glass down. "We still have one card to play."
Olivia looked up, frightened. "What are you talking about?"
"Helena thinks she’s untouchable because she has the legal courts and the banks behind her," Victor whispered, his eyes glinting with a vile, unhinged madness. "She forgets how the Blackwoods survived for eighty years. We don't beat lawyers with lawyers. We beat them with lead."
Olivia gasped, standing up. "Victor, no! She's my sister! And... and she's pregnant with Adrian's children!"
"Those children are a threat to us!" Victor snarled, standing up and towering over her. "If those twins are born, Adrian will give everything left of our family assets to her in a desperate bid for forgiveness! They will inherit the Vale fortune and the Blackwood name, while we are left with nothing! If Helena disappears... the leases revert back to the core alliance council. We get it all back."
"You're crazy!" Olivia screamed, backing away toward the cellar stairs. "Adrian will kill you if you touch her!"
"Adrian is broken!" Victor shouted. "He lost his nerve the moment he saw her belly! I am saving this family!"
Victor pulled an encrypted satellite phone from his pocket and dialed a number. "Moretti? It's Victor Hale. The target is staying at the coastal Vale estate in Camden. She has minimal security—just four guards and her driver. If your hit squad takes her out tonight, the Grayhaven deep-water port is yours for the taking."
Victor listened for a moment, then smiled—a grotesque, terrifying expression. "Good. Do it before dawn."
Olivia stood on the stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at the old man who had manipulated her for eleven months, feeding her vanity, convincing her that she was meant to be Queen, using her desire for status to drive a wedge between Adrian and Helena.
For the first time, the horrifying reality of what she had participated in crushed Olivia's soul. She hadn't just taken her sister's husband; she had handed her sister over to a pack of wolves.
Without a word, Olivia turned and ran up the stairs, sprinting through the dark, empty corridors of Blackwood House until she reached Adrian's master study.
She threw the heavy door open.
Adrian was sitting in a dark leather armchair by the unlit fireplace, an empty bottle of bourbon on the floor beside him. He was holding a small silver charm—the twin to the one Helena had carried—that he had found in her forgotten jewelry box on her dresser.
"Adrian!" Olivia sobbed, falling to her knees beside his chair. "Adrian, wake up! Please, God, wake up!"
Adrian didn't move his head. His eyes were hollow, red-rimmed, staring blankly into the cold fireplace. "Get out, Olivia."
"Victor called the Morettis!" Olivia shrieked, grabbing his lapels, shaking him with all her strength. "He gave them Helena's location! He hired a hit squad to go to the Camden estate tonight! They're going to kill her, Adrian! They're going to kill her and the babies!"
The word babies hit Adrian like an electric shock.
The drunken haze cleared instantly from his eyes. The hollow, lifeless expression vanished, replaced in a split second by the terrifying, lethal darkness of the mafia boss who had once ruled the state with an iron fist.
Adrian grabbed Olivia's wrists, his grip like steel. "What did you just say?"
"Victor... he wants the leases back," Olivia wept hysterically. "They're on their way to Camden right now!"
Adrian stood up so fast his chair overturned. He reached into his desk drawer, pulling out two heavy tactical handguns, racking the slides with a brutal, mechanical clack.

"If a single hair on her head is touched, Olivia," Adrian whispered, his voice vibrating with a deadly, demonic promise, "I will ensure you and Victor are buried in the same unmarked hole."
He shoved past her, tearing down the hallway into the night.
