Chapter 6 - Confrontation in Zurich

The glass-and-steel skyscraper housing Schenker & Vale Law stood prominently in Zurich's financial district. Outside, a light rain fell over the clean, quiet streets.

In a top-floor conference room overlooking the city, Helena sat at a massive glass table surrounded by four senior Swiss corporate attorneys. She wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon. She looked commanding, sharp, and utterly in control.

"The reversionary clause is sound, Miss Vale," the senior partner, Herr Schenker, said, sliding a thick legal dossier across the table. "By stripping you of your title without a formal tribunal, the Blackwood council committed a material breach of the 1954 alliance contract. As of 9:00 AM Central European Time, the land leases for all eight major piers in Grayhaven Harbor have reverted exclusively to your personal holding company."

"And the eviction notices?" Helena asked calmly.

"They have been served directly to the Blackwood Maritime corporate office in Maine," Schenker replied with a professional smile. "They have seventy-two hours to clear their physical assets from your land, or face immediate seizure by the United States Marshals."

Before Helena could respond, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the conference room burst open.

Two Swiss private security guards were shoved backward as Adrian Blackwood strode into the room. He was drenched in rain, his coat unbuttoned, his breathing heavy. His eyes locked onto Helena like a homing beacon, ignoring the attorneys who immediately stood up in outrage.

"Helena," Adrian breathed out, his voice thick with a mixture of relief, fury, and sheer desperation.

Marcus stepped forward instantly from the corner of the room, his hand reaching inside his jacket toward his sidearm, but Helena raised a single, calm hand to stop him.

"It's fine, Marcus," Helena said softly. She didn't stand up. She remained seated, looking at Adrian as if he were a client who had arrived without an appointment. "Mr. Blackwood. You've traveled a long way to interrupt a legal meeting."

"We need to talk. Now," Adrian said, taking three heavy steps toward the table.

"Herr Schenker, please give us five minutes," Helena said smoothly to her legal team.

reached for his briefcase, nodding politely. "We will be in the adjacent suite, Miss Vale. The Marshals are standing by for your final signature."

The lawyers exited, closing the heavy glass doors behind them. The room became deathly quiet, save for the faint hum of the rain against the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Adrian stood across the glass table from her. Seeing her standing here—magnificent, untouchable, and completely self-sufficient—sent a sharp, agonizing ache through his chest. He looked down and noticed her hand resting calmly on the table.

And then his eyes caught something else.

Helena was wearing a loose silk blouse, but as she leaned back slightly, the fabric draped over her figure. Adrian’s eyes widened. His breath hitched in his throat.

He had lived with her for six years. He knew every inch of her body. He knew the soft curve of her waist, the way she carried herself.

The swell beneath her jacket was undeniable.

"Helena..." Adrian whispered, his voice cracking completely. He stumbled forward, his hand reaching out toward her stomach, his eyes wide with a horrifying, sudden realization. "What... what is that?"

Helena’s expression didn't change, but her eyes hardened into twin shards of diamond. She smoothly shifted her portfolio, blocking his view.

"That is none of your concern, Adrian," she said coldly.

"None of my concern?!" Adrian gasped, his composure completely shattering. He slammed both hands onto the glass table, leaning over her. "You're pregnant! Helena, my God... you're pregnant!"

"I am pregnant," Helena corrected him, her voice rising with a terrible, icy authority. "These are my children. They have nothing to do with you or the Blackwood family."

Adrian felt as if the entire room had tilted on its axis. The blood roared in his ears. Four years of failed IVF treatments, four years of quiet tears, four years of empty nurseries in Blackwood House... and now, here she was, carrying his blood across an ocean, after he had thrown her away.

"How far along are you?" he choked out, tears unexpectedly stinging his eyes.

"Twenty-two weeks," Helena replied steadily. "Twins."

Adrian fell back a step, grabbing the back of a chair to steady himself. "Twins... Helena, why didn't you tell me? When you opened that council room door five days ago... you knew?!"

"I carried two silver charms in my pocket that night, Adrian," Helena said, her voice dropping into a register of utter heartbreak and cold truth. "I flew across the Atlantic early to surprise you. I had the ultrasound in my bag. I wanted to put your hand on my stomach. I wanted us to build a family away from the darkness."

She stood up slowly, facing him across the wide glass table.

"Instead, I found my sister wearing my coat. I found you standing beside her with your shirt unbuttoned. And I found seven signatures declaring me obsolete."

"Helena, I didn't know!" Adrian pleaded, coming around the table, falling to one knee beside her chair, reaching up to try and grab her hands. "I swear to God, Helena, I didn't know! If I had known you were carrying my children, I would have burned that council room to the ground! I would have killed Victor myself before letting him sign that paper!"

Helena looked down at the powerful mafia boss kneeling at her feet, weeping over her knees. A month ago, this sight would have broken her heart. Today, it only confirmed her resolve.

"That is your fundamental flaw, Adrian," Helena said softly, gently pulling her hands away from his grasp. "You think a child is the only reason to treat a wife with dignity. You think loyalty is something you grant when it suits your agenda, and retract when you want a younger, softer audience."

"I made a mistake!" Adrian sobbed, gripping the hem of her jacket. "A terrible, monstrous mistake! Come home, Helena. Please. I'll strip Olivia of everything. I'll banish Victor from the state. I'll put your name on every company, every document, every stone of Blackwood House! Just come home!"

May you like

Helena looked down at him, her face serene, beautiful, and completely unreachable.

"There is no home in Grayhaven anymore, Adrian," Helena whispered. "You didn't just lose a wife tonight. You lost your empire. And you lost your children."
