Chapter 7 - The Aftermath in the Garden

By 11:30 PM, the Grand Harbor Country Club had emptied.
Police cars and federal vehicles had departed, taking Grant Mercer, his corrupt accountants, and his legal team into federal custody. The story was already making front-page headlines across North Carolina financial news: MERCER CAPITAL COLLAPSES IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD RAID.
The quiet rose garden behind the estate was cold and serene, lit by warm lantern lights and the soft reflection of Lake Norman.
Evelyn Bennett sat on a stone bench, holding a cup of tea. Caleb stood beside her, his arm wrapped around his mother’s shoulders. The burden that had weighed down the Bennett family for eleven months had finally dissolved into the cool night air.
Claire and I walked down the stone path toward them.
Evelyn stood up immediately, stepping forward and taking my hands in hers.
“Mason,” Evelyn whispered, her eyes filled with deep, tearful gratitude. “I don't know how our family can ever repay you. You saved my son. You saved my husband’s company.”
“You don't owe me anything, Evelyn,” I said gently. “Claire did the hard part. She was brave enough to stand up when everyone told her to give up.”
Caleb stepped forward, extending his hand to me. “I’m sorry I doubted you at the entrance, Mason. If it wasn't for you, I’d be facing federal indictment right now.”
“You’re a good architect, Caleb,” I smiled, shaking his hand firmly. “Go rebuild your father’s company. Make sure no one like Grant ever gets near the door again.”
Evelyn looked between Claire and me, a gentle, knowing smile touching her lips. She looked down at the heirloom diamond ring on Claire’s finger.
“That’s a very old, very beautiful ring, Mason,” Evelyn noted softly.
Claire blushed, looking down at her hand, her thumb gently tracing the silver ring I still wore on my own hand.
“It belonged to my grandmother,” I explained. “She wore it for fifty-two years while my grandfather drove freight across the country.”
Evelyn smiled softly, kissing Claire’s cheek. “We’ll give you two some privacy. Caleb, let's go call our legal team and prepare the company restructuring for tomorrow morning.”
As her family walked back inside the clubhouse, Claire and I stood together near the edge of the stone terrace, listening to the soft rustle of leaves in the wind.

The ten-hour flight was over. The fake marriage had served its purpose. The villain was in prison.
Yet, neither of us took off our rings.
