Chapter 10 - The Real Vows

That afternoon, as the sun began to dip into a horizon of pink and gold, a small gathering assembled on the wooden porch of the Outer Banks home.

There were no eighty high-society guests, no media cameras, no corporate contracts, and no champagne towers.

Just Evelyn, Caleb, Hank Miller, and a local magistrate standing under an arch of wild sea lavender.

Claire walked out onto the porch wearing a simple, breathtaking white linen dress. Her hair was woven with small white flowers, and her smile was bright enough to outshine the lighthouse down the coast.

I stood waiting for her at the front of the porch, wearing a sharp navy suit, my heart beating with the steady, joyful rhythm of a man who had finally reached his final destination.

When she reached me, I took both of her hands in mine.

The magistrate smiled, opening his leather ledger. “We are gathered here today to unite Mason Reed and Claire Bennett in holy matrimony.”

He looked at me. “Mason, do you have your vows?”

I looked straight into Claire’s eyes, holding her hands tightly.

“Claire,” I said, my voice rich and steady. “Seven months ago, on a ten-hour flight from Rome, you thrust a plain silver ring onto my finger and asked me to pretend to be your husband. You were terrified, cornered, and fighting for your family’s life.”

Claire smiled through tears, holding her breath.

“I didn't know your name, your story, or your secrets,” I continued. “But in those ten hours, I found the most courageous, beautiful, and resilient woman I have ever known. I promised to protect you on that airplane, but today, I promise you something better.”

I pulled a new gold wedding band from my pocket, sliding it onto her finger alongside her grandmother’s diamond.

“I promise to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to pretend again,” I vowed softly. “I promise to build a home with you where you are always safe, always cherished, and always free.”

Tears spilled down Claire’s cheeks—tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

She took my hand, sliding a matching gold band onto my ring finger, replacing the cheap silver ring from the flight.

“Mason,” Claire whispered, her voice filled with profound love. “In seat 31A, I thought I was choosing a stranger to help me survive ten hours. I didn't know I was meeting the man who would give me a lifetime of peace. You didn't just save my family, Mason. You gave me a home.”

She looked up into my eyes with radiant certainty. “I choose you today, tomorrow, and for every road ahead.”

“By the power vested in me,” the magistrate announced with a warm smile, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. Mason, you may kiss your bride.”

I wrapped my arms around Claire, lifting her slightly as I kissed her under the golden coastal sky.

Evelyn and Caleb applauded, their faces glowing with pure joy, while Hank Miller whistled loudly from the front lawn.

When I set Claire back down, she rested her head against my chest, her arms wrapped tightly around my waist, watching the calm ocean waves wash over the shoreline.

The flight was over. The storm had passed. And standing on the porch her father built, wrapped in the arms of the man who loved her, Claire Bennett was finally home.
