Chapter 6 - The Digital Execution

The massive 4K video screen above the stage flickered to life.
Instead of the corporate promotional presentation for Mercer Capital, high-definition bank statements, wire transfer logs, and encrypted email threads appeared in front of eighty of Charlotte’s most influential investors.
A loud, collective murmur swept through the ballroom.
“What is that?!” an investor in the front row shouted, pointing at the screen. “Those are offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands!”
“That’s Mercer Capital’s private routing system!” another corporate partner gasped.
I stepped onto the stage, pulling a wireless microphone from my tuxedo jacket. My voice carried across the silent room with deep, command authority.
“What you are looking at,” I announced, “is the systematic embezzlement of $14 million from Bennett Coastal Development over the last eleven months.”
Grant’s face turned ghastly white. “TURN IT OFF! TURN THAT SCREEN OFF RIGHT NOW!”
He lunged toward the AV booth, but Hank Miller blocked his path, planting a broad hand against Grant’s chest and pushing him back onto the stage.
“The records on that screen,” I continued calmly, “show that Grant Mercer forged Caleb Bennett’s digital signature on three separate offshore credit agreements. He intentionally defaulted on those loans to trigger an emergency takeover clause that would strip forty percent of Bennett Coastal away from Claire Bennett.”
Claire walked onto the stage, standing right beside me. She took the microphone from my hand, looking directly at the crowd of investors.
“My father, Thomas Bennett, built our family business on honesty, hard work, and loyalty to this community,” Claire said, her voice rich with emotional power. “Grant Mercer tried to use my father’s memory to trap my mother, frame my brother, and steal our legacy.”
Caleb stepped onto the stage, staring up at the screen displaying the forged signatures bearing his name. He turned toward Grant, his face red with betrayal and fury.
“You framed me?!” Caleb yelled, walking up to Grant and grabbing him by his lapels. “I trusted you! My father treated you like a son!”
“Get off me, you pathetic idiot!” Grant screamed, shoving Caleb backward.
Grant turned toward the exit, attempting to run down the side aisle toward the terrace doors.
The terrace doors swung open.
Four Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in dark suits stepped into the room, badges displayed around their necks.
“Grant Mercer!” the lead FBI Special Agent announced, his voice booming over the commotion. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, falsification of financial records, and international passport theft!”
The crowd parted in absolute shock as the agents grabbed Grant, forcing him down onto his knees near the center of the ballroom.
Cold steel handcuffs snapped around Grant’s wrists.
Grant thrashed against the agents, his hair falling into his face, his polished composure completely destroyed. He looked up at Claire, his eyes wild with desperate rage.
“YOU DESTROYED EVERYTHING, CLAIRE!” Grant shrieked as he was dragged across the marble floor. “YOU WERE NOTHING WITHOUT ME! NOTHING!”

Claire looked down at him as he was paraded past the stunned guests.
“I was never nothing, Grant,” she said quietly, her voice ringing with absolute clarity. “I was just waiting for the right man to help me see it.”
