Chapter 4 - The Terminal Trap

The tires of Flight 412 slammed onto the tarmac at Charlotte Douglas International Airport with a heavy thud, the thrust reversers roaring as the aircraft slowed down.
The cabin lights flashed on. Passengers immediately stood up, opening overhead bins, rustling jackets, and reaching for their phones.
Claire looked at me, her hands trembling as she adjusted her coat. “This is it.”
“Keep your ring on,” I said, checking my watch. It was 8:35 PM. “Stay right behind me. No matter what Grant says, no matter how loud he screams, you do not step away from my side.”
We joined the line of passengers shuffling toward the front of the plane. As we crossed the bridge from economy into first class, Grant was waiting at the exit door.
He looked immaculate—his charcoal suit unwrinkled, his dark hair slicked back. Two private security guards in dark suits were standing right behind him in the jetway.
“Claire,” Grant said smoothly, stepping directly into our path. “Your mother is already waiting in the private customs line. My men will escort you through the VIP diplomatic clearance.”
“She’s staying with me,” I said, stepping between Grant’s men and Claire.
Grant chuckled, reaching into his suit coat and flashing the corner of Claire’s blue U.S. passport. “She can’t clear customs with you, Reed. She doesn't have travel documentation. Unless, of course, her legal custodian—me—presents her emergency conservatorship paperwork to the border agent.”
One of Grant’s guards stepped forward, reaching for Claire’s arm.
Before the guard’s hand could touch her, I grabbed his wrist, twisting it downward with precision leverage I had used to secure fifty-ton flatbed straps for two decades. The guard let out a sharp gasp, bending at the knees as pressure hit his joint.
“Touch her again,” I said coldly, “and you won't use that hand for a year.”
The second guard reached into his jacket, but before he could pull anything, four uniformed Airport Police officers came rushing down the jetway, led by a tall, broad-shouldered man in a tactical jacket—Hank Miller.
“POLICE! STAND DOWN!” Hank’s voice echoed like thunder through the jetway.
Grant’s eyes went wide. “What is this?! I am Grant Mercer of Mercer Capital! I demand to speak to your commissioner!”
Hank walked right past Grant, stepping up to me and extending his hand. “Good to see you, Boss. Everything’s staged outside.”
“Hank,” I said, letting go of the guard’s wrist. “This man is in possession of stolen federal property. He confiscated Claire Bennett’s passport without her consent during an international flight.”
Grant stammered, backing away toward the wall. “That’s a lie! I’m her financial trustee! She gave it to me for safekeeping!”
Claire stepped out from behind me, her voice ringing clear and loud through the crowded jetway, drawing the attention of dozens of disembarking passengers.
“I never gave you my passport, Grant!” she declared fiercely. “You took it from my bag at the gate in Rome! You have been holding me under duress, blackmailing my family, and attempting to steal my father’s business!”
Hank turned to the senior airport police officer. “Officer, we have eyewitness testimony from the mother, Evelyn Bennett, who is currently in the main terminal giving a formal statement to federal investigators regarding corporate fraud and passport theft.”
The police officer stepped up to Grant, his hand resting on his taser holster. “Sir, hand over the passport immediately, or you will be taken into custody right here on federal airport grounds.”
Grant’s face turned bright red, veins bulging against his neck. He looked at the police, at Hank’s imposing security team, and finally at me—standing tall beside Claire, holding her hand firmly in mine.
With shaking fingers, Grant reached into his jacket, pulled out Claire’s passport, and hurled it against my chest.
“Take it!” Grant hissed, his voice laced with venom. “It doesn't change anything, Claire! The engagement dinner is in an hour at the Grand Harbor Club! Every major investor in Charlotte is sitting in that room! Your brother is waiting there! If you don't show up and sign the merger by nine-thirty, Caleb’s career is over by midnight!”

I caught the passport in mid-air, handing it back to Claire.
“We’ll be at the dinner, Grant,” I said, a dangerous calm settling into my voice. “Make sure you have a seat reserved for the husband.”
