Chapter 8 - The Falling Curtain

Adrian rushed down the stage steps, grabbing my arm tightly, attempting to forcibly drag me toward the side exit.
“Have you completely lost your mind?!” he hissed under his breath, his eyes wild with fury. “You’re ruining my biggest night! Get the hell out of here before I have security throw you on the street!”
I didn't flinch. I looked down at his hand on my arm, then looked up into his eyes with an icy smile.
“Take your hands off me, Adrian,” I said softly, “before the officers behind me add assault to your federal indictment.”
Adrian blinked, frowning in confusion. “What are you talking about—?”
Assistant District Attorney Katherine Brooks stepped forward, pulling a gold badge and a thick crimson folder from her leather briefcase.
“Adrian Cole? Julian Mercer?” ADA Brooks announced, her voice booming across the silent penthouse suite. “I am Assistant District Attorney Katherine Brooks with the State of Colorado Financial Crimes Task Force.”
The entire room gasped. Guests pulled out their phones, video recording the unfolding drama as corporate investors backed away from the stage in utter terror.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Julian shouted, his arrogant mask slipping into frantic panic. “This is a legitimate financial institution! You can’t just barge in here!”
“We have a federal search warrant for these premises, Mr. Mercer,” ADA Brooks replied calmly, gesturing to the officers behind her. “And we have arrest warrants for both of you, along with your co-conspirator Richard Hayes, who is currently in federal custody.”
Adrian’s face drained of every drop of color. He turned to me, his hands beginning to shake violently.
“Maya... what... what did you do?” he stuttered, his voice losing all its power. “Richard signed the trust documents! The house belongs to Valen Operations! You have no power here!”
Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a certified legal document from his folder and holding it up for the entire room—and the local news cameras that had just burst through the front doors—to see.
“Actually, Mr. Cole,” Marcus said with a cold, terrifying smile, “your wife discovered your fraudulent scheme three weeks ago. The documents you had notarized at the Grand Hyatt one hour ago were modified legal counter-agreements.”
Julian’s eyes went wide. “MODIFIED?!”
“Your wife did not transfer her ancestral home to your shell company,” Marcus explained, speaking with articulate, deadly precision. “Instead, under Section 14 of the executed contract, you personally assumed absolute financial liability for $1.2 million in defaulted corporate debt, while irrevocably transferring ninety percent of your voting shares in Cole & Associates directly to Maya Vance.”
Adrian looked as if he had been struck by lightning. He staggered back, grabbing the wooden railing of the stage to keep from collapsing onto the floor.
“No... no... that’s impossible!” Adrian shrieked, turning on Julian, then looking back at me with wild, terrified eyes. “YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME! I’M YOUR HUSBAND!”
“You were a parasite living in my father’s house, Adrian,” I corrected him, stepping closer, my voice carrying with absolute, cold authority. “You thought you were going to leave me with nothing at Gate 42. You thought I didn't hear you tell Julian that I was going to lose everything.”
I pulled my phone from my clutch, tapping the screen, and holding it up to the microphone.
The speakers throughout the penthouse blasted the clear, crisp audio I had recorded at the airport three days ago:
“Once the transfer is completed, she won’t have access to anything. The accounts will be handled, the documents are ready, and the separation will be simple.”
“What about the house?”
“That’s already taken care of.”
The entire penthouse went dead silent. Guests stared at Adrian and Julian with pure disgust and horror.
Julian collapsed into a chair behind the stage, burying his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably as he realized his life was completely over.
ADA Brooks stepped onto the stage, nodding to the uniformed federal officers.
“Adrian Cole, Julian Mercer,” Detective Frank Brody announced, pulling two pairs of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for felony wire fraud, grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, tax evasion, and criminal conspiracy.”
The officers grabbed Adrian’s arms, twisting them behind his back, snapping the cold steel cuffs around his wrists.
“MAYA! PLEASE!” Adrian wailed, falling to his knees on the marble floor as the handcuffs clicked tight. “I WAS CONFUSED! JULIAN FORCED ME INTO THIS! I LOVE YOU! PLEASE DON’T DO THIS TO ME!”
I stood over him, looking down at his weeping, humiliated form with absolute, unyielding calm.

“You said I wouldn't know what happened until it was too late, Adrian,” I whispered softly, leaning down so only he could hear. “You were right about one thing... it really is too late.”
The cameras flashed continuously as Adrian Cole and Julian Mercer were paraded through the crowded penthouse in handcuffs, past their former investors, past the local news crews, and out into the waiting police cruisers below.
