Chapter 5 - The Silent Countdown

Thursday was a masterpiece of psychological warfare.

Adrian spent the entire day acting like a king who had just conquered a new empire. He bought himself a forty-thousand-dollar Swiss watch using our joint credit card—a purchase he assumed I would never be able to contest once my accounts were frozen on Friday. He strutted around the house, making mysterious phone calls from the terrace, drinking my father’s finest single-malt whiskies, and making condescending remarks about my interior design business.

“You know, Maya,” he said over breakfast, slicing his steak with arrogant precision, “maybe after this new venture closes on Friday, you should consider retiring from your design work altogether. You work too hard for such small returns. You should just stay home, relax, and let me handle the big money.”

“Oh? You think my business is small returns?” I asked, taking a delicate sip of green tea.

“Well, let’s be realistic, sweetie,” he chuckled patronizingly. “You make a few hundred thousand a year remodeling kitchens for suburban wives. I’m handling multi-million-dollar corporate restructuring. We operate on entirely different levels.”

“You’re right, Adrian,” I said, looking at him with deep, penetrating clarity. “We really do operate on entirely different levels.”

He didn't catch the cold edge in my voice. He was too intoxicated by his own impending triumph.

While Adrian spent his afternoon getting a luxury spa treatment downtown to prepare for his victory party with Julian, I was putting the final pieces of my trap into place.

At 2:00 PM, I met with Detective Frank Brody in a blacked-out SUV parked two blocks from the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

“The trap is primed, Maya,” Frank reported, handing me a secure tablet. “We’ve coordinated with the Colorado State Department of Revenue and the FBI Financial Crimes Task Force. Assistant District Attorney Katherine Brooks has personally signed off on the arrest warrants for Adrian Cole, Julian Mercer, and Richard Hayes for felony grand larceny, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and falsification of public records.”

“And the media?” I asked.

Frank smiled grimly. “Three investigative reporters from the Denver Post and two local news crews have been tipped off about a major federal raid occurring at Julian Mercer’s downtown launch gala tomorrow night at 8:00 PM. They think they’re covering an elite corporate launch. They’re going to get the story of the decade.”

“What about Richard?” I inquired. “My husband’s lawyer?”

“Richard was intercepted two hours ago by federal agents as he tried to notarize the fraudulent deed documents at his office,” Frank revealed. “The moment he saw the evidence we had on his kickback accounts, he cracked like a plastic fork. He’s fully cooperating with the DA’s office in exchange for a reduced sentence. He’s going to notarize the modified documents Adrian presents tomorrow without saying a single word.”

I closed my eyes, letting a deep, satisfying sense of peace wash over me.

Every angle was covered. Every escape route was blocked. Every lie Adrian had ever told was converted into a cold, immutable piece of evidence held by federal prosecutors.

“How are you holding up, Maya?” Frank asked gently, looking at me with genuine concern. “It’s never easy watching the person you shared a bed with turn out to be a monster.”

I opened my eyes, looking out the tinted window at the grey Denver skyline.

“I’m not grieving a husband, Frank,” I said softly. “I’m executing a parasite.”
