Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Penthouse

The penthouse suite of the luxury Luminary Tower in downtown Denver was ablaze with golden light, crystal chandeliers, and ambient jazz music.
Over eighty prominent figures from Denver’s financial and real estate elite were gathered, sipping champagne and eating caviar hors d'oeuvres. Julian had spared no expense using the stolen corporate funds to throw himself a lavish "grand opening" for his new investment firm.
At 7:45 PM, Adrian and Julian stood near the grand glass stage at the center of the room, holding micro-phones, surrounded by wealthy clients, corrupt associates, and oblivious socialites.
Adrian looked around the room like a king addressing his court.
“Ladies and gentlemen!” Adrian’s voice boomed through the high-end sound system, drawing the crowd’s attention. “Thank you all for coming tonight to celebrate the official launch of Mercer & Cole Global Financial!”
The crowd applauded politely.
Julian stepped forward, putting his hand on Adrian’s shoulder with explicit, lingering intimacy that made several conservative investors in the front row raise their eyebrows.
“Tonight,” Julian announced proudly, “marks a new era of financial dominance. We have successfully secured over fifteen million dollars in asset acquisitions this week alone—including some of the finest historical real estate in Colorado!”
Adrian beamed, raising his champagne glass high. “To vision! To power! And to knowing how to take what is rightfully yours!”
“What a lovely speech, Adrian,” a smooth, clear, commanding voice echoed from the back of the penthouse suite.
The crowd went dead quiet.
The velvet ropes at the entrance were pushed aside as I stepped into the bright lights of the penthouse.
I walked down the marble aisle with absolute grace, my emerald silk gown swaying softly, my posture regal, my eyes fixed on my husband with an icy, terrifying calm.
Behind me walked Marcus Vance in his double-breasted legal suit, Detective Frank Brody, and Assistant District Attorney Katherine Brooks, flanked by four uniformed federal officers in tactical vests.
Adrian’s champagne glass froze halfway to his mouth. His eyes widened in utter shock as he saw me walking into his private victory party.
“Maya?!” Adrian stuttered, his face flushing crimson with sudden embarrassment and rage. “What the hell are you doing here?! How did you get past security?!”
Julian stepped forward, his face twisting into a sneer. “Get this woman out of here! This is a private corporate event!”

I stopped right at the base of the glass stage, looking up at both of them with a calm, pitying smile.
“Oh, don't stop the party on my account, boys,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the sound system. “I just came to congratulate my husband on his new business venture... and to deliver his closing gift.”
