Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Plot

The fallout from the press conference was immediate and catastrophic—for the Haynes family.

Within hours, public sympathy swung overwhelmingly toward Ethan and Rosa. Social media praised Ethan for standing up for his daughter and taking public accountability for his past mistakes, while Victoria Haynes was universally condemned as a bully. News footage of her hiding her face at the press conference went viral, causing the Haynes Group's stock prices to plunge by twelve percent by the closing bell.

However, behind closed doors, Richard Haynes was not a man to go down without a fight.

Three days after the press conference, Ethan sat in his private office at Caldwell Tower, reviewing financial documents with his head of security, Marcus. Rosa was downstairs in the foundation office, beginning her new role overseeing charity initiatives for underprivileged mothers—a role she had accepted only on the condition that she earned her salary.

"Ethan," Marcus said, placing a manila folder on the desk. "We did a background check on how Victoria and Richard managed to push the media leak so fast. It turns out Richard was deeper in financial trouble than anyone realized."

Ethan opened the file, scanning the records. "Explain."

"The Haynes Group was heading toward bankruptcy," Marcus revealed. "Richard lost over eighty million dollars in failed real estate ventures in South Florida last year. The merger with Caldwell Enterprises wasn't just a union of high-society families—it was his bailout plan. When you canceled the wedding, his entire financial facade collapsed."

Ethan's eyes narrowed. "So he was desperate."

"Desperate enough to hire a private investigator two weeks before the piano incident," Marcus added.

Ethan looked up sharply. "What?"

"Richard hired an agency to dig into your domestic staff a month ago, looking for any dirt he could use as leverage against you in merger negotiations," Marcus said, pointing to a wire transfer record in the file. "He already knew Rosa was working in your house. He knew about Lily. He was holding that information, waiting for the right moment to blackmail you into signing the merger terms!"

Ethan’s fist slammed onto the wooden desk, rattling the glass paperweights. "He knew my daughter was living in my house, cleaning my floors, and he kept it quiet to use as blackmail?!"

"Yes," Marcus confirmed. "And there's more. Victoria didn't just stumble upon Lily at the piano by accident that morning. She knew who Lily was. She went into the east parlor specifically to confront the child."

A cold, dangerous fury burned in Ethan’s chest. The thought of Victoria knowingly targeting a helpless three-year-old girl out of corporate spite was unforgivable.

"Where is Richard Haynes right now?" Ethan asked, his voice low and menacing.

"He's at the Manhattan Club, trying to secure an emergency loan from his remaining investors," Marcus replied.

Ethan stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Get the car, Marcus. It's time to put an end to Richard Haynes once and for all."

Twenty minutes later, Ethan walked into the private dining room of the prestigious Manhattan Club. Richard Haynes was sitting at a corner table with three prominent bank executives, sweating profusely as he pleaded for credit extensions.

When Richard saw Ethan approaching, his face paled, but he quickly tried to regain his composure. "Ethan. What is the meaning of this intrusion?"

Ethan didn't answer him. He simply threw the manila folder onto the center of the dining table, right in front of the bank executives.

"Gentlemen," Ethan said smoothly to the bankers. "Before you extend a single dollar of credit to Mr. Haynes, I suggest you look at page four. It outlines his illegal corporate espionage, wire fraud, and the pending fraud lawsuit Caldwell Enterprises is filing against him this afternoon."

The bankers quickly opened the file, their eyes widening as they scanned the evidence of Richard's hidden debts and illegal investigations.

"This is absurd! Fabrication!" Richard yelled, standing up so fast he knocked his chair back. "Ethan, you're trying to ruin me!"

"You ruined yourself, Richard," Ethan said, leaning over the table, staring into the older man's terrified eyes. "You targeted my daughter. You used a three-year-old child as collateral in your sick corporate games. By five o'clock today, every bank in New York will freeze your assets. Your company is done."

The three bank executives stood up, closing their folders. "Mr. Haynes," one of them said coldly, "our meeting is over. Do not call our offices again."

As the bankers walked out, Richard collapsed back into his seat, his head in his hands, completely broken. Ethan looked down at him without a shred of pity.

"If you or your daughter ever mention my family's name again," Ethan whispered, "I won't just ruin you financially. I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a federal prison."

Ethan turned and walked out of the club, leaving the fallen tycoon in the dust of his own creation.
