Chapter 6 - A Haven Built on Secrets

By nightfall, the massive Caldwell estate felt vastly different. The frantic preparations for the grand dinner party were abandoned; Ethan had his staff cancel all incoming caterers, musicians, and high-society guests with a brief statement citing "unforeseen personal matters."

In the guest wing of the estate, Ethan had instructed the housekeeper to prepare the master suite for Rosa and Lily. Rosa had initially protested, insisting on taking a taxi back to her tiny apartment in Queens, but Ethan stood firm.

"It's dark, Lily is tired, and her arm needs rest," Ethan had argued gently. "Please, just stay tonight. We have twenty-four hours before the storm hits. Let me make sure you both are safe."

Now, Lily was fast asleep in a giant, plush king-sized bed, clutching Button the rabbit under a heavy feather duvet. The room was warm, lit only by the soft glow of a bedside lamp and the flickering flames of the fireplace.

Rosa sat in an armchair near the hearth, holding a warm cup of tea Ethan had personally brought up for her. Ethan sat opposite her, staring into the fire, swirling a glass of amber scotch he hadn't yet touched.

"She looks so peaceful," Ethan whispered, looking toward the bed where Lily slept. "I still can't believe... three years, Rosa. I missed three years of her life."

"She loves stories," Rosa said quietly, looking at her teacup. "She loves strawberries, hate shoes with laces, and she tries to feed her vegetables to her stuffed rabbit when she thinks I'm not looking."

Ethan let out a soft, wet laugh, wiping his eye quickly. "Tell me more. Tell me everything."

For the next two hours, the quiet room became a bridge across four lost years. Rosa shared stories of Lily’s first steps in their cramped living room, her first words, her fascination with birds, and her absolute obsession with music. In turn, Ethan listened with rapt attention, his heart aching with every milestone he had missed, yet swelling with immense pride for the woman sitting across from him.

"You raised an incredible girl all on your own, Rosa," Ethan said softly. "While working jobs, while pushing through... I am so sorry I wasn't there to help you carry that weight."

"I did what any mother would do," Rosa replied, looking at him thoughtfully. "I won't pretend it was easy, Ethan. There were nights I didn't eat so I could afford her formula. There were winters where I prayed the radiator wouldn't stop working. But every time I looked at her eyes, I saw... well, I saw a part of something good."

Ethan set his glass down on the side table and leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees. "Why didn't you leave when you were assigned to my house two years ago? When you realized it was my estate?"

Rosa sighed softly. "The agency assigned me. By the time I walked through those front doors and realized whose house it was, I was desperate for the pay rate. And then... I saw you."

"Did I seem like a monster to you?"

"No," Rosa said gently. "You seemed empty. You walked through these giant, pristine halls like a ghost in your own home. You worked sixteen hours a day, you barely smiled, and you were surrounded by people who only cared about what your name could do for them. I saw how distant you were, even with Victoria. I realized you weren't happy. And part of me... part of me couldn't bear the thought of walking away again."

Ethan looked at her, deeply moved. "I wasn't happy, Rosa. I haven't been happy since the summer I lost you."

The tension in the room shifted, growing warmer and intimate. The unspoken emotions from four years ago lingered between them, untamed by time.

Before either of them could speak further, Ethan's personal phone on the table began to vibrate frantically. The screen lit up with caller ID: HEAD OF PUBLIC RELATIONS.

Ethan picked up the phone and answered. "Speak, Sarah."

"Ethan, we have a massive problem," his PR director's panicked voice leaked through the speaker. "The New York Post and several major tabloids just received an anonymous leak. They're preparing to run a cover story tomorrow morning: 'Billionaire Ethan Caldwell Dumps Heiress for Secret Servant Lover and Hidden Child.' Photos of Rosa entering your estate are already leaking online. Richard Haynes is actively giving off-the-record quotes calling you unstable and predatory."

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Stop the presses."

"We can't," Sarah urged. "Haynes is funding the dissemination himself. The media bloodhounds are already driving toward your Greenwich estate. By dawn, your front gate will be surrounded by news vans."

Ethan looked at Rosa, whose face had gone pale as she overheard the phone conversation.

"They want a war," Ethan said quietly into the phone, his voice turning to steel. "Prepare a formal press conference for tomorrow afternoon at ten o'clock at Caldwell Headquarters."

May you like

"A press conference?!" Sarah gasped. "To deny it?"

"No," Ethan replied firmly. "To tell the truth."
