Chapter 5 - Shadows over Greenwich

Ethan closed his eyes briefly, drawing a sharp breath before turning back to Rosa. "Stay in here with Lily," he directed quietly. "I'll handle this."

"Ethan, who is that?" Rosa asked, seeing the sudden shift in his posture.

"Victoria's father," Ethan replied coldly. "He thinks his money buys him immunity and respect. He's about to find out it doesn't."

Ethan stepped out into the grand foyer just as the massive front doors were pushed open. Richard Haynes stormed into the estate, his expensive wool coat billowing around him, his face flushed with anger. Victoria walked briskly behind him, her arms crossed, looking smug and triumphant now that her powerful father was present.

"Caldwell!" Richard barked, his booming voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. "What is the meaning of this insolence? My daughter comes home in tears, claiming you threw her out of your house and canceled the wedding over a maid's child?!"

Ethan stood at the foot of the grand staircase, his hands casually in his pockets, his body language cool, measured, and entirely unbothered by Richard's rage.

"Richard," Ethan said smoothly. "You're trespassing."

"Don't give me that legal nonsense!" Richard roared, stepping closer until he was just a few feet from Ethan. "We have a merger tied to this marriage! Millions of dollars in capital, cross-promotional contracts, and prestige! You don't just terminate an engagement hours before our family dinner over a domestic dispute!"

"It wasn't a domestic dispute," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of chilling finality. "Your daughter physically assaulted a three-year-old child in my home."

"She was a trespasser!" Victoria yelled from behind her father. "A maid's child touching a heirloom! I cleared her away from your property!"

"She is my daughter," Ethan said clearly, emphasizing every word.

Richard froze. His bluster momentarily faltered as he processed the statement. "What did you say?"

"The child in question is my daughter," Ethan repeated, staring straight into Richard's eyes. "My blood. And your daughter put her hands on her, shoved her off a piano bench onto a marble floor, and bruised her. If I were acting purely on emotion, Richard, I would have your daughter arrested for assault right now."

Victoria went pale. "Ethan, you wouldn't!"

"Try me," Ethan warned softly. "You are extremely fortunate that I am prioritizing my daughter's safety over dragging your family through a public scandal. But make no mistake: the engagement is terminated. The business merger is canceled. Effective immediately."

Richard's face contorted with rage. "You would ruin a forty-million-dollar partnership over a bastard child from a servant?!"

Before Ethan could react, the door to the east parlor opened. Rosa stepped out into the foyer, her head held high, holding Lily securely in her arms. She walked straight toward the angry group, her eyes fixed on Richard Haynes.

"Do not call my child that," Rosa said, her voice clear, strong, and unwavering. "My daughter has a name. It is Lily. And she has more grace in her little finger than your daughter has in her entire body."

Richard sneered at Rosa. "Ah, the maid. I see what this is. A calculated shakedown. How much did you scheme for this, young lady? How long were you waiting in the shadows to spring this trap?"

"She didn't scheme anything," Ethan snapped, stepping between Richard and Rosa, protecting them with his posture. "Rosa never asked me for a single dollar. She worked for every cent she earned while you and your daughter lived off inherited wealth and arrogance."

Ethan turned to the door, calling for his chief security officer, who was waiting in the hallway. "Marcus, show Mr. Haynes and his daughter off the property. If either of them steps foot on this estate again, file immediate trespassing charges."

Marcus, a broad-shouldered security chief, stepped forward. "Right this way, Mr. Haynes."

Richard stared at Ethan with cold, burning hatred. "This isn't over, Caldwell. You think you can humiliate the Haynes family and walk away? I will tear your corporate reputation to pieces. By Monday morning, every paper in New York will know about your secret child and how you threw away your reputation for a house servant!"

"Let them print whatever they want," Ethan said coldly. "Now get out."

With a final, furious glare, Richard turned and marched out, Victoria trailing behind him, her face a mask of shock and embarrassment. The heavy front doors shut behind them, leaving the foyer in silence once more.

Ethan turned around to face Rosa. She was trembling slightly, holding Lily close.

"Are you alright?" Ethan asked gently.

May you like

Rosa looked at him, her dark eyes filled with overwhelming exhaustion. "Ethan... this is turning into a nightmare. They're going to destroy your name. They're going to drag Lily into the public eye. I came here to earn a living, not to ruin your life."

"You didn't ruin my life, Rosa," Ethan said quietly, walking closer until he was standing right in front of them. "You just saved it from a terrible mistake. And as for Lily... no one is going to harm her. Not while I'm breathing."
