Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

Within two hours, the Grand Regency Ballroom was completely empty, save for the venue staff cleaning up shattered glass and discarded orchids.

The story had already exploded across every major news outlet and social media platform. Headlines dominated the evening news:

"SOCIETY FRAUD: TECH EXECUTIVE ARRESTED AT SON'S CHRISTENING" "HEIRESS EXPOSES HUSBAND AND SISTER'S $2.4M EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME"

Gavin was held without bail due to being a flight risk, faced with multiple counts of grand larceny, forgery, and corporate fraud. Without funds to hire a private attorney, he was assigned a public defender. His tech company collapsed overnight, and his former business partners immediately filed civil suits against him to recover their losses.

Brooke was forced to move back into my parents' small, modest apartment—the only property my father still owned after First Star Holdings enforced the eviction on the alliance headquarters.

Stripped of her luxury lifestyle, her designer wardrobe, and her social status, Brooke found herself utterly isolated. Her high-society friends vanished instantly, deleting their photos with her and blocking her number.

Three days after the christening, my father came to my restaurant office alone.

He looked broken. The proud, arrogant man who had dismissed me for years now stood in front of my desk with rounded shoulders and bloodshot eyes.

"Eleanor," he said, his voice trembling. "I... I came to apologize."

I sat behind my desk, signing documents for L'Étoile’s upcoming expansion into three new cities. I didn't look up immediately. I let the silence stretch until he shuffled his feet uncomfortably.

"Apologize for what, Father?" I asked, finally looking at him. "For helping Gavin cover up the forgery? Or for being upset that you got caught?"

"We made a mistake," he stammered, dropping into a chair. "Brooke is spiraling, Eleanor. She has a newborn baby, and Gavin is going to prison for at least ten years. We have no money left. The legal fees are eating whatever savings I had. I'm begging you... as your father... give us a chance to fix this. Drop the civil claims on the Cumberland house. Let Brooke live there."

I looked at my father, feeling a profound sense of release. For years, I had craved his approval, his warmth, his recognition. But looking at him now, I realized he was just a small, weak man who had traded his integrity for illusion.

"No," I said simply.

"Eleanor, please!" he begged, tears welling in his eyes. "She's your sister!"

"She was my sister when she took my husband," I replied, my voice steady and cold as ice. "She was my sister when she smirked at me from a hospital bed and told me to keep paying her bills. You made your choice that day in Room 314, Father. You chose to stand behind them. Now, you get to stand with them in the ruin you built together."

I stood up and opened the office door. Victor was waiting outside with two security guards.

"Goodbye, Father," I said.

He looked at me, realizing for the first time that the gentle, submissive daughter he thought he could manipulate was gone forever. He slowly stood up and walked out, his head bowed in complete defeat.
