Chapter 6 - The Grand Illusion

Sunday arrived—a crisp, clear morning that seemed far too bright for the storm that was about to break.

The Grand Regency Ballroom was decorated in extravagant splendor. Crystal chandeliers caught the light, illuminating tables draped in ivory silk, covered in lush arrangements of white orchids and gold accents. Over two hundred guests—politicians, prominent business owners, news anchors, and high-society couples—filled the hall.

At the center of it all stood Gavin and Brooke.

Gavin looked handsome in a bespoke tuxedo, though if anyone looked closely enough, they would notice the slight twitch in his jaw and the dark circles under his eyes, masked by heavy makeup. Brooke was resplendent in a custom lace gown, cradling baby Leo in her arms, with my grandmother’s diamond necklace sparkling brightly against her throat.

My parents hovered nearby, beaming with pride, introducing their "successful son-in-law" and "blessed younger daughter" to every influential person in the room.

From a private, darkened balcony on the second floor overlooking the ballroom, I watched them.

I was dressed in a floor-length tailored emerald green dress. Victor sat beside me, sipping a glass of ice water, while Marcus Vance stood near the balcony doorway with two men in sharp gray suits—official process servers—and two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Division.

"Look at them," Victor whispered, watching Gavin pop a bottle of $800 champagne. "They really believe they've won."

"Arrogance always precedes the fall," I said softly, my voice calm and steady. "Are all the preparations in place?"

"Every single one," Marcus confirmed, looking at his watch. "The court order freezing all of Gavin’s personal and corporate accounts took effect thirty minutes ago. The foreclosure notice on the Cumberland house has been filed. The police report for grand larceny of the necklace is signed. And the media package..." Marcus smiled thinly. "...has just been delivered to every press outlet sitting at the front tables."

Below us, the chime of a silver spoon tapping against a crystal glass echoed through the ballroom.

My father stepped up to the main stage, holding a microphone, a wide, triumphant smile on his face.

"Ladies and gentlemen, honored guests," my father’s voice boomed across the speakers. "Thank you all for joining us on this sacred and joyful day. Today, we celebrate not only the christening of my grandson, Leo Joseph, but also the official union of two incredible souls—my daughter Brooke and her partner, Gavin!"

The crowd erupted into warm applause. Gavin put his arm around Brooke's waist, kissing her cheek while she beamed at the cameras.

"Family is about loyalty," my father continued, his voice taking on a sharp edge that I recognized all too well. "It is about knowing who stands by you, and letting go of those who lack the strength to build a real future. Today, our family stands stronger, purer, and more united than ever before."

May you like

"Purer," I repeated under my breath on the balcony. A cold smile touched my lips. "It's time, Marcus."

Marcus nodded to the officers and the process servers. "Let's begin."
