Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

My father was just lifting his champagne glass to lead the room in a grand toast when the large mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a heavy, echoing thud.

The music faded. The crowd turned, murmuring in confusion as two uniformed police officers and three men in legal attire walked down the central aisle toward the stage.

Gavin’s smile faltered. His eyes narrowed in irritation. "What is the meaning of this?" he demanded into the microphone my father was holding. "This is a private event! Security, remove these people!"

The lead police officer, Officer Miller, didn't hesitate. He stepped right up to the stage, pulling a heavy legal document from his jacket.

"Gavin Vance?" Officer Miller asked, his voice cutting clearly through the silent room.

"Yes, I am Gavin Vance," Gavin said, trying to maintain his authoritative composure. "And whatever administrative mistake you are making, I suggest you correct it outside before I call the Chief of Police."

"There is no mistake, Mr. Vance," Officer Miller replied calmly. "I have a warrant for your arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and the illegal conversion of real estate assets. Furthermore, I have an emergency order from the State Superior Court to seize property currently in your possession."

A collective gasp swept through the two hundred guests. Flashbulbs began to go off as the invited journalists realized the massive scandal unfolding before their eyes.

"What?!" Brooke shrieked, stepping forward with baby Leo in her arms. "This is absurd! My husband is a respected executive! Who ordered this nonsense?!"

"I did," a quiet, firm voice echoed from the upper balcony.

Every head in the ballroom turned upward.

I stepped out from the shadows into the bright lights of the chandelier, standing at the edge of the balcony railing. My emerald dress caught the light, making me look regal, composed, and utterly untouched by their chaos. Victor and Marcus stood on either side of me like silent guardians.

"Eleanor?" my mother gasped, her face draining of all color.

"Hello, Mother. Hello, Brooke," I said, my voice effortlessly carrying through the acoustics of the grand hall. "Happy christening."

Gavin looked up at me, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage and panic. "You... you crazy bitch! What have you done?!"

"I didn't do anything, Gavin," I replied calmly. "You did it all yourself. You forged my name to steal the Cumberland house. You embezzled millions from my company to pay for your failing investments and this very party. And you gave my sister a necklace that never belonged to you."

Brooke reflexively reached up, her hand clutching the diamond necklace around her neck. "This is mine! Gavin bought it for me!"

"That necklace belongs to First Star Holdings," Marcus Vance called down from the balcony, holding up an official court mandate. "It was stolen from an estate vault three years ago. Officers, please recover the stolen asset."

A female officer stepped up onto the stage. Brooke screamed as the officer firmly but carefully unclasped the $350,000 diamond necklace from her neck, placing it into an evidence bag.

"Gavin!" Brooke wailed, tears smearing her makeup as the crowd recorded every second on their phones. "Do something! Tell them she's lying!"

May you like

Gavin opened his mouth to speak, but before he could utter a word, his phone vibrated violently in his pocket. Then his assistant’s phone rang. Then my father’s phone rang.

The dominoes were beginning to fall.
