Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Four days before the christening, my sister Brooke sent me a text message. It contained a photo of her wearing an exquisite platinum diamond necklace—a piece from my grandmother’s private collection that had gone missing three years ago.
Caption: "Gavin gave me this to celebrate our new beginning. Fits me so much better than it ever would have fit you. Stay mad, big sis. xoxo"
I stared at the image of my grandmother’s necklace around Brooke's neck. That necklace wasn't just gold and diamonds; it was a registered cultural asset tied to First Star Holdings, documented in my grandfather’s legal estate filing with an audited valuation of $350,000.
By taking that necklace and giving it to Brooke, Gavin had crossed from civil fraud directly into felony grand theft of personal property.
I immediately forwarded the photo to Marcus Vance.
Marcus: "Is this the missing piece from the 1982 estate registry?" Eleanor: "Yes. She just publicly posted proof of possession." Marcus: "This is the nail in the coffin, Eleanor. I am issuing an emergency warrant for recovery of stolen property, to be executed simultaneously with the civil process servers at the event."
Meanwhile, my father was busy making his own moves.
He called a meeting with the board of directors of the regional restaurant alliance—an organization where he served as chairman and where my restaurant held a prominent seat. My father attempted to quietly revoke L'Étoile’s operating license under the guise of "financial instability of the owner."
He thought he was being subtle. He thought he was clearing the path for Gavin and Brooke to take over my business once I was broke.
However, my father had forgotten one critical detail: First Star Holdings owned the commercial real estate of 70% of the restaurants in the alliance, including the very building where the alliance held its headquarters.
On Friday morning, my father walked into his office at the alliance building to find a formal eviction notice taped to his glass door, alongside an immediate freeze on all alliance funds pending an independent forensic audit ordered by the master landlord—First Star Holdings.
Panicked, my father called my phone six times in a row. I let every single call go straight to voicemail.
When he finally sent a text reading, "Eleanor, what is happening? Some corporate entity is shutting down the alliance office! Did you have something to do with this?"

I replied with a single sentence: "I told Mother that truth finds a way to shine. See you on Sunday."
The trap was fully set. Gavin was drowning in debt he couldn't cover. Brooke was parading around wearing stolen estate jewelry. My parents were facing total exposure for their complicity. And none of them knew that the quiet, dutiful daughter they had trampled on held the keys to their complete annihilation.
