Chapter 6 - The Federal Net

BANG!

The heavy oak door of Suite 814 slammed open against the wall.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE!"

Six heavily armed agents dressed in dark tactical vests bearing bright blue FBI letters swarmed into the room, their weapons raised and aimed straight at the two figures wrestling on the floor.

"Hands in the air! On the ground! NOW!" an agent screamed over the chaotic scene.

Daniel froze, his blood-stained face dripping onto Vanessa’s ruined silk blouse. He looked up, his eyes wide with absolute horror as he saw the red laser dots dancing across his chest.

Vanessa let out a piercing shriek, throwing her arms over her head, sobbing uncontrollably as she pressed her face against the carpet.

"Get off her! Face down!" two agents shouted, grabbing Daniel by his arms, twisting them violently behind his back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Daniel screamed, his voice cracking with hysterical terror as he was yanked to his feet. "I am Daniel Miller! I am an executive at Vanguard Technologies! You have no right—"

A tall, grey-haired man in a sleek trench coat stepped into the room, holding a leather badge folder and a stack of signed federal arrest warrants.

"Mr. Miller, I am Special Agent Thomas Vance with the FBI Cyber Crime Division," the man declared flatly. "You are under arrest for attempted grand larceny, wire fraud, illegal corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Daniel’s heart stopped. "Conspiracy to... to murder?! That’s absurd! My wife fell! It was an accident!"

Agent Vance didn't argue. He simply stepped aside, making way for the doorway.

I stepped into the hotel suite.

I was wearing a long black coat, my gauze head bandage visible beneath the brim of my silk hat, flanked by Marcus Hale and my lead corporate attorney.

Daniel stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Clara..."

"Hello, Daniel," I said, my voice echoing coldly through the trashed hotel room. "Hello, Vanessa."

Vanessa looked up from the floor, her eyes red, her face scratched and bleeding from her brawl with Daniel. "Clara... please..." she whimpered, reaching out a hand. "He made me do it! Daniel planned everything! He told me he would ruin me if I didn't help him!"

"You lying snake!" Daniel screamed, lunging against the grip of the two FBI agents holding him. "She came up with the idea to hit you, Clara! She told me to make sure you stayed down! She wanted your money for her failing fashion line!"

"Shut up! Both of you!" Agent Vance commanded sternly.

I walked slowly over to the desk, looking down at the shattered tablet displaying the flagged $40,000,000 wire transfer notification.

"You thought you were so clever, Daniel," I murmured, turning to face him. "You thought that because you had my power of attorney and my laptop, you owned my mind. You thought I was just a naive girl who got lucky in tech."

"Clara, please," Daniel begged, tears finally spilling down his bloody cheeks. "We can fix this! I love you! I was confused, I was under so much stress—"

"You don't love anyone, Daniel," I cut him off, my voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper. "You love control. But you lost it the second you struck me."

I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out my smartphone, and tapped the screen.

The room’s quiet air was instantly filled with the crystal-clear, high-definition audio recording playing from my phone's speakers:

“Do it again—make sure she stays down.”

“She’s alive... She won’t remember anything. By tomorrow, we’ll have the account codes. By Friday, the money will be offshore.”

Daniel’s eyes went completely dead. Every single drop of blood drained from his face. He collapsed against the FBI agent holding him, his knees buckling completely.

Vanessa threw her head onto the carpet, screaming in pure, hopeless terror as the realization hit her like a freight train.

"The recording device was inside the Entrepreneur of the Year trophy," I explained softly, looking at Daniel’s hollow, defeated face. "It was transmitting live to Marcus’s server from the second your hand swung that crystal edge into my skull."

Agent Vance stepped forward, gesturing to his officers. "Take them down."

The agents dragged Daniel and Vanessa out of the suite. As Daniel passed me, his eyes met mine one last time—not with anger, not with greed, but with the profound, terrifying realization that he had destroyed his entire existence for a victory he had never even possessed.

I didn't watch them leave.

I turned around, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Midtown Manhattan, and took a deep, clean breath of air.
