Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Apple

Inside Suite 814 at the Plaza Hotel, the air was thick with smoke and desperation.
Vanessa paced across the velvet rug, a glass of gin shaking violently in her hand. Her phone had been ringing incessantly for two hours—creditors, journalists, her lead designer, her production manager in Milan—all demanding answers, all demanding money she didn't have.
Daniel sat at the mahogany desk, his eyes glued to his tablet screen, his fingers flying across the encrypted banking portal interface.
"Daniel, speak to me!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her glass onto the coffee table. "Chase Manhattan froze my accounts! The Milan factory just canceled the silk shipments! I am going to be ruined by tomorrow morning!"
"Will you shut your mouth for five minutes?!" Daniel roared, snapping his head toward her. His face was pale, sweat dripping down his temples. "I am trying to move forty million dollars! Once that money hits Zurich, your six million dollar debt is pocket change! Just give me ten minutes!"
Vanessa gasped, stepping back as if he had struck her. "Don't you dare speak to me like that! I did this for you! I held her down while you—"
"Keep your loud mouth quiet!" Daniel hissed, jumping out of his chair, reaching out and grabbing her wrist roughly. "Do you want the walls to hear you?! We are in this together, Vanessa! But if you lose your nerve now, we both go to prison!"
Vanessa pulled her arm free, her eyes burning with a mixture of terror and rising hatred.
At that exact second, Vanessa’s private phone buzzed on the couch.
She snatched it up, expecting another angry call from her bank. Instead, it was an encrypted text message from an unlisted number.
She clicked the notification.
Attached to the text was an image file—a certified copy of the incorporation papers for Kensington Holdings LLC, the offshore entity in Zurich that Daniel had set up to receive the stolen forty million dollars.
Vanessa’s eyes scanned the document rapidly.
Sole Managing Member: Daniel Miller.
Equity Ownership: 100%
Beneficiary Designation: Daniel Miller.
Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat. Her name was nowhere on the document. There was no secondary signatory, no shared trust, no protection for her whatsoever.
She looked up from her phone screen, staring at the back of Daniel’s head as he bent over his tablet, humming softly to himself as the progress bar reached 90%.
"Daniel," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a dangerously quiet register.
"Not now, Vanessa," he muttered, typing in his final security token digits. "It's almost done."
"The Zurich account," she continued, taking two slow steps toward the desk, her fingers tightening around a heavy brass paperweight resting on the side table. "Whose name is on the registration?"
Daniel froze for a split second. He didn't turn around. "It’s a blind trust, sweetie. It protects us both."
"Liar," she whispered.
Daniel didn't hear her. The screen in front of him flashed green.
AUTHORIZATION COMPLETE. WIRE TRANSFER INITIATED: $40,000,000.00 USD.
A manic, triumphant laugh erupted from Daniel’s chest. He threw his hands into the air, spinning his chair around to face her. "We did it! It’s done! The money is out of Vanguard! Clara is powerless!"
He stopped laughing when he saw the brass paperweight raised high in Vanessa’s right hand.
"Vanessa... what are you doing?" Daniel stammered, his triumphant smile instantly evaporating.
"You were going to leave me," Vanessa hissed, her eyes wide, wild, and unhinged. "You made me hit my best friend, you made me ruin my life, and you registered the forty million dollars in your name only!"
"What?! No! Vanessa, listen to me—"
"You lying bastard!" she screamed, lunging across the desk, swinging the brass weight directly at his face.
Daniel ducked frantically, the heavy metal missing his jaw by an inch and smashing into his tablet screen, shattering the glass into a hundred spiderweb fractures.
He lunged forward, grabbing her by the throat, slamming her backward against the wall. The gin glass crashed to the floor.
"You crazy bitch!" Daniel spat, his face contorted in rage, his fingers digging into her neck. "I gave you everything! You would be nothing without me!"
Vanessa clawed wildly at his face, her fingernails tearing deep, bloody tracks down his left cheek.
They fought like animals across the luxurious hotel suite, smashing lamps, tearing curtains, completely consumed by the toxic greed that had brought them together.

They were so deafened by their own rage that neither of them heard the heavy footsteps thundering down the carpeted hallway outside Suite 814.
Nor did they hear the sharp, metallic click of a master keycard sliding into the door lock.
