Chapter 4 - The Financial Trap

By noon, the news of my public appearance and Daniel’s sudden removal from Vanguard Technologies sent shockwaves through the financial press. Vanguard’s stock dipped three percent before rebounding sharply, driven by investor confidence in my swift return to command.
I discharged myself from Greenwich Hospital at 1:30 PM against medical advice.
I didn't go back to the estate in Greenwich. I went straight to my private penthouse suite at the St. Regis in Midtown, which Marcus had swept for listening devices and fortified with four private security personnel.
Sitting at the glass desk overlooking Central Park, dressed in a black silk suit that covered my bandages, I opened my personal laptop.
"Report," I said to Marcus, who was standing beside the window with two thick paper folders.
"Daniel left the Vanguard building in a panic," Marcus reported. "He went straight to a private suite at the Plaza Hotel, where Vanessa met him thirty minutes later. Our parabolic directional microphone captured their conversation inside the suite."
Marcus tapped his phone, playing the live intercept.
“She remembered! She knew!” Vanessa was sobbing hysterically over the recording. “I told you we should have hit her harder, Daniel! She’s going to ruin us!”
“Shut up, Vanessa!” Daniel’s voice slammed back, tight and panicked. “She doesn't know anything about the night! She just thinks I tried to take her company while she was in the hospital! She thinks it was a corporate power play!”
“What about the money? The banks are going to call my loans if she pulls her personal guarantee!”
“We move to Plan B,” Daniel hissed. “The secondary clearing account at Swiss Capital Bank. I still have the master cryptographic key we generated during the merger last year. I’m transferring forty million dollars to our offshore entity in Zurich at 4:00 PM when the European markets close.”
I closed my eyes, letting a satisfied sigh slip past my lips.
Plan B.
The forty million dollars in the Swiss Capital account was Vanguard’s primary liquidity reserve for international acquisitions. Daniel had helped set up the encryption protocols eighteen months ago, believing he had retained a back-door administrative key.
What Daniel didn't know was that three weeks ago, when Marcus discovered someone probing the account from Daniel’s personal laptop, we didn't block his administrative key.
We cloned it.
"Is the honeypot active?" I asked Marcus.
"Fully active," Marcus confirmed with a cold grin. "When Daniel enters his cryptographic key to authorize the forty-million-dollar wire, the system won't rout the funds to Zurich. It will redirect the transaction through an escrow holding account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, flagged under the International Anti-Money Laundering and Fraud Act."
"And the authorization IP?"
"It will register directly to his personal tablet inside the Plaza Hotel suite," Marcus added. "The moment he clicks 'Confirm,' he executes a felony grand larceny and wire fraud in real-time, witnessed by federal cybercrime monitors."
I picked up a pen, twirling it between my fingers. "What about Vanessa’s fashion company?"
"Chase Manhattan officially froze her credit facility thirty minutes ago after you signed the formal withdrawal of your personal guarantee," Marcus said, handing me the second folder. "Her suppliers in Milan have already canceled her upcoming Spring collection shipments. She owes $6.2 million in unpaid production bills due by 5:00 PM today. If she fails to pay, her creditors will file for involuntary Chapter 7 liquidation before sunset."
I looked at my watch. 3:15 PM.
"Send Vanessa an anonymous text message," I instructed Marcus softly.
"What should it say?"
"Tell her that Daniel is currently preparing to transfer forty million dollars out of the country to an offshore account in his name only—and that his name is the only one listed on the Zurich shell company."

Marcus paused, a dark flicker of amusement crossing his eyes. "You're turning her against him."
"Vanessa didn't strike me with that trophy because she loved Daniel," I said coldly, remembering the sickening sound of her voice telling him to hit me again. "She did it because she’s greedy. The moment she realizes Daniel is leaving her behind with six million dollars in debt, she will devour him alive."
