Julian closed his eyes, a single, painful tear cutting through the anger on his face. The betrayal was complete.

Right at that moment, the distant, wailing sound of police sirens began to echo through the estate's wrought-iron gates. They grew louder and louder until red and blue lights began to dance across the pristine white walls of the kitchen.

Elena looked up at Julian, her hand still trembling against his chest.

"Did you really not know, Julian? Did you really not look for me?"

Julian shook his head, his face filled with absolute, crushing sorrow. He brought his hand up to gently cup her cheek, wiping away a smear of dirt with his thumb.

"I swear to you on my life, Elena, I didn't know. I hired private investigators. I searched across the country. My mother told me you took a settlement and ran away to Europe. She forged a bank transfer under your name."

He looked down at her belly, his gaze softening with a reverence that broke through the horror of the morning. Slowly, he placed his large, warm palm over her abdomen, feeling the slight, beautiful curve.

Elena placed her small hand over his, letting out a long, ragged breath, finally allowing herself to cry tears of true relief.
