Chapter 4: The Ultrasound Secret

Julian’s face went entirely pale, the blood draining from his lips.

"I never said that. I’ve been searching for you for months, Elena. I thought you hated me. I thought our child was gone."

Elena looked into his eyes and recognized the genuine torment reflecting back at her. With a trembling hand, she reached into the deep pocket of her stained apron. She pulled out a small, crinkled piece of paper that had been folded over a dozen times.

She handed it to him.

Julian unfolded it with shaking fingers. It was an ultrasound image dated just a week ago. On the back, written in Elena’s hurried, uneven handwriting, were the words:

Our son is still alive.

Julian stared at the tiny image of his unborn child, his chest heaving as a heavy sob tore from his throat. He pressed the paper against his heart and looked at Elena.

"Is it real?" he choked out. "Our boy is okay?"

Elena nodded through her tears, her voice a fragile whisper.

"He is alive, Julian. He is fighting."
